Confusion regarding the meaning of islam

sorry i know this might be a very basic questionabut alot of people say islam means peace, like arabic speaking people say it too while i know that islam means total submission ?

Could someone clarify this please

its wrong to say that Islam means peace. salaam means peace.

Islam means surrendering one's will to the Will of Allah Almighty as said by
revert2007 & ayman1.

if we take word peace for Islam....that will mean: in a state of peace with Allah. ie. pleasing Him and obeying Him.

it not only means peace, but is also means submission..
islam means something related to peace..

salaam aleykom, islam is an arabic word and has more than one definition. it can mean submission, surrender, peace, sincerity, obedience and even more. in islamic context it generally means 'submission to the will of God' and this obviously would require the above words as well. in other words, one who does the above is called a 'muslim'. so although it has more than one definition, in general it is called submission to the will of God. this is only one of many things which makes islam unique from other religions and that is the fact that it is not named after any person, place, or anything like that but it rather a simple word which few beautiful meanings.
