salam alikom,

just ask someone which direction is the South, if they know then ask again which direction is East... lol

Another method: use google maps if you have access to the internet. Go to your location and in the corner it will show the south-east direction...

Another method: buy a compass off of ebay

Another method; the iPhone has an app of a compass, I'm not sure about other smart phones.

and as a final resort (and the answer to your Q); it's okay to pray in whatever direction u think is right, so have a guess, and go ahead and pray...

Even if we assume that you do not find out the direction of the qiblah, try your best to find out which direction is most likely, and pray facing that direction; your prayer will be valid and there will be no sin on you.

You can use a compass or some watches or other things that are equipped with a compass, or a map of the world, in order to find out the direction of the qiblah.

By looking at a map of the world you will see that the direction of the qiblah... A slight error in direction for those who are far away from Makkah is forgivable.

Assalamu Alaikum,

If you cannot use a map, phone, or compass, make the intention that East and West belong to Allah and offer your prayers.

I really love this ayah:
2:177 "It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the God-fearing."
