Do I have to believe 100% of Islam to convert?

Zilliz, I'm really glad you posted this topic as I am in the same situation as you!! I've been wondering about this myself, as a non-muslim who has learned about Islam but doesnt believe all of it (yet). The replies are very encouraging!!

I would like to add onto the original question-- I think Islam makes a lot of sense, but I was not raised to follow any religion so I am having trouble getting over my 20 years of not believing in anything in particular!! Any suggestions to help me out?:tti_sister:

Hi Hannabanu

best thing is to hang around good muslims... one way is this form, making good muslim friends from this form :D ...

asking any question that you may have about islam...

Allah loves his creation, so why not love him!!!...

he gave us A LOT... think about it, our body functions "on its on!!!"... our heart beats on its on, food we eat get digested and used, we can see, hear, smell, and feeeeeeel...<< these and many other are blessings... one may not recognize them until he loose them...

you may find a close by mosque/masjid from this website

Striving for Paradise
I am studying Islam and have learned a lot. I think it is beautiful and I want to convert. I know that I do NOT know everything or understand everything yet, but I am learning. I have some questions about the things I have learned though and I wonder if I can convert to Islam if I do not immediately believe everything I learn through Islam.
For example, I grew up in the US and learned about evolution in school. I know that Muslims do not believe in evolution. I am confused about this and really do not know what to believe right now on this point.
Also, I still have SO much to learn about Islam.
I think Islam is very beautiful and very significant for me but I worry that I will not be a good Muslim if I do not believe every point 100%.
Does this mean I should not convert?
Your advice is greatly appreciated. Peace be upon you.

:salam2:
My dear sister,

You don't need to know a lot before becoming a Muslim. Just take Shahadah that; "there is no God except Allah and Mohammad is his messenger" and you become a Muslim. You can do it alone in your home with Allah as your witness or in a Mosque infront of many people, the location is not critical. But taking Shahadah in a gathering introduces you to many Muslims and I think is a much better way of becoming a Muslim. One should take Shahadah as soon as possible because no one knows the time of ones death.

As far as believing things like evolution is concerned, I think it is trivial. After all this is just a theory and part of science. Science and its theories do change overtime as knowledge grows.
What do I believe about evolution? Well... I will have to explain it a little bit:

There are many things in Quran which are way ahead of its time even from today's standard. For instance Einstein's Theory of Relativity explained that time is a variable quantity, in Quran Allah says:
(22:47) And they ask you to hasten on the torment! And Allâh fails not His Promise. And verily, a day with your Lord is as a thousand years of what you reckon.
(70:4) The angels and the Rûh (Jibriel) ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years.

So the Quran presented the idea of relativity of time almost 1500 years ago.

I haven't seen any Muslim scholar who believe that this universe and earth is only 8-10 thousand years old as many people of the book believe, and this is because of the information provided in the Quran such as the above mentioned verses.

The Quran also describes that Allah "made from water every living thing" (21:30) and science agrees with it. So Allah created life on this planet earth a couple of billions years ago by coupling the spirit (Ruh) with cells/DNA (if you allow me to compare then think of it like spirit as software and cell/DNA as hardware) and in this hardware (DNA) he placed the capacity to mutate/adjust itself based on the environmental condition. People who live where there is lots of sunlight their skin become darker while those who live where there is little sunlight their skin become lighter, not only that but they pass this information to their offspring too via genes (DNA). So I believe "evolution" is a set of rules created by Allah by which he has evolved so many species.

Now what about us humans?:
I think the Neanderthals might have evolved as explained in the theory of evolution, but Allah replaced them with Homosepians (humans) in a more direct and miraculous way. Why I believe this? Because Allah says in the Quran:
"We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape..." (15:26), and, "He began the creation of man from clay, and made his progeny from a quintessence of fluid" (32:7-8), and, "And Allâh has brought you forth from the (dust of) earth" (71:17) etc.

So I believe if an angel which no one else could see but was visible to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and he could communicate with this angel, and if Allah could call His beloved Prophet for Isra and Meraaj then why can't He remove one specie and replace it with another similar looking specie. Therefore I believe Allah made Neanderthals extict just before bringing Adam (PBUH) on to this planet earth. And in doing so He added this another test for us (children of Adam) to see whether we give more importance to our own science and research -or- to the words of Almighty God.

This whole universe is a huge testing center where several species are being tested, we know two of them Humans and Jinns. But this universe is soooo immense, and now we know that there are billions and billions of galexies each containing billions and billions of stars like our sun, and so today the scientists believe that there is a big possiblity that there exist many other planets with intelligent beings like us in this universe. And Subhan-Allah, Quran told us about this 1500 years ago in the following verses of the Holy Quran:
(42:29) Among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the living things, which He has scattered in both. He can gather them all together whenever He wills.
(65:12) Allah is He Who created seven heavens and of the earth also their like. His Command descends among them. (This you are being told) so that you may know that Allah has power over everything, and that Allah's knowledge encompasses all.

Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah... This is so amazing !!!

Maulana Mowdodi has given the following explanation of the above verse in his Tafheem-ul Quran written in 1960's:
"Also their like"-- does not mean that He created as many earths as the heavens, but it means that He has also created several earths as He has created several heavens. "Of the earth"-- mean that just as this earth which is inhabited by man is serving as bed and cradle for the creatures living on it, so has Allah made and set other earths also in the universe, which serve as beds and cradles for the creatures living on them. Moreover, there arc clear pointers in the Qur'an to the effect that living creatures are not found only on the earth but also in the heavens. In other words! the countless stars and planets seen in the sky are not all lying desolate, but like the earth there are many among them which are inhabited.
From among the earliest commentators Ibn 'Abbas is the one, who had expressed this truth in the period when man was not even prepared to imagine that in the universe there are other habitats also, apart from the earth, where rational creatures live. Even the scientists of today are yet in doubt about this being a reality, nothing to say of the people living 1500 years ago, That is why Ibn 'Abbas felt hesitant about whether he should say such a thing before the common people or not, because he feared it might affect their faith. Mujahid says that when he was asked the meaning of this verse, he said: "If I give you the commentary of this verse, you will turn disbelievers, and your disbelief will be that you will deny it." Almost the same thing has been related from Sa'id bin Jubair, saying; Ibn Abbas said: "What can be the guarantee that if I tell you its meaning, you would not turn disbelievers?" (Ibn Jarir, 'Abd bin Humaid). However, Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim, Hakim and Baihaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman and Kitab al-Asma' was Sifat have cited, on the authority of Abud-Doha, this commentary from Ibn Abbas in different words: "In each of those earths there is a Prophet like your Prophet, an Adam like your Adam, a Noah like your Noah, an Abraham like your Abraham, and a Jesus like your Jesus." Allama Alusi in his discussion about this commentary writes: "There is neither any intellectual barrier to taking it as correct nor religious. It only means that in every earth there is a creation which turns to its origin just as mankind in our earth turns to Adam (peace be upon him). and in every earth there are individuals, who are distinguished among others just as the Prophets Noah and Abraham (peace be upon them) are distinguished among us."
It would be interesting to note that lately the Rand Corporation of America have estimated on the basis of their astronomical observations that only in the Galaxy to which our earth belongs there arc about 600,000,000 (six hundred million) planets physical conditions on which closely resemble those on the earth, and there is a possibility that they may also be inhabited just as is the earth by living creatures. (Economist, London 26July, 1969).

So as you can see science and Islam are not contrary to one another, they compliment one another and there are many many other scientific surprises in the Quran. So what I do is that I do not supercede the existing scientific theory above the clear verses of Quran, because scientific theories can change but Quran is final.

Again, whatever I wrote regarding my belief or understanding are my own understanding only. I am not saying other should accept it too.

I Hope that my answer helped you in any way. I pray for you my dear sister.

Thnx for the post. I read it.

ziliz and hanabanu (forgive me If i said it wrong).

First and foremost requirement to be a Muslim is the Sahada as many brothers and sisters mentioned.
Then comes other fundamental beliefs such as (Aqeedah, Tawheed, Ghaib, prophets, angels) Many of these are interrelated.

After you become a Muslim (by declaring the Sahada), the rest just gradually develops.

Knowledge is something that all Muslims (or at least all Musilms should) continue to pursue throughout their lives. Some of us (even born Muslims) are on the beginning stage of that pursuit, some of us are ahead of others, but it is not something that hold us back from being Muslims. So have no fear concerning knowledge.
Have your trust in Allah and ask for his guidance, surely he will guide you.

P.S. In the mean time, nothing is better than reading the Quran.

May Allah guide you both to Islam, and make your path easy and steadfast.

"O you who believe! Give your response to Allaah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allaah comes in between a man and his heart, and it is He to whom you shall all be gathered." Al-Anfaal (8):24

Yes...

Yes...I read the post. Sorry to not reply. I am so busy and stressed at the moment, trying to pack to move to Morocco.

I really don't know what to believe right now.
I know I believe in Allah and that Mohammed was his messenger. I know I believe in the 5 pillars of Islam. I know that I believe...

But...Allah is testing me. Allah has thrown a big giant mess of tests at me all at once and I truly wonder why.

I have always tried to be a good person and have led my life that way...but today I found out something that is just too much for me to deal with and I wonder why Allah put this in my path.

I am truly trying to sort out what I need to do in life, figure out if Islam is my path. I have learned so much in the past few weeks and I keep reading the Koran and boards like this. There is so much information to sort through and I want to make the right choice. I know that turning away from Islam is a VERY serious thing....so I want to make sure what I'm "getting into" before taking Shahada.
I'm not sure that thinking about it is any better than turning away, really. I know what I need to do...but I am such a mess at the moment.

I wish I could share what is going on in my life....but I think it is truly too much to write here, as I'm a new member and people do not know me.
I CAN say that I am going through the hardest thing that I have ever dealt with and I am struggling.

Please keep this confused soul in your prayers. I really need them.
Peace be upon you.

Salaam,

Hello there. So Allah subhana talla has put a big mess in front of you. All I can say is lucky you. First you know it will work out. Sometimes we are given tasks to do. That is easy. You have dirty dishes..your task is to wash the dishes. At other times we have to undergo a process. This is hard. We can not see the change as quickly. The internal mechanisms work slowly. When we come out of a process period we are changed in a dramtic manner. Hence, our langage is filled with words like metamorphasis. We change and the outer appearance also changes.

I do not know what the test is. I do know you will come out of it. Please place all your Trust in Allah subhana talla and only in Allah subhana talla. It is for your own good. It is similar to taking the giant leap...into faith and love..
should you need to talk please feel free to PM me.

Insha'Allah you will be in our prayers.

Sorry for the late reply, I just read the last posts and enjoyed reading them... Like Zilliz, I want to make SURE I truly want to convert before making such a big life change. Most of my family would think I turned a litle crazy if I do, so it'll be a challenge. Sooo I want to feel very confident in my decision. I'm just taking it one step at a time for now!!

Thanks for your replies, everyone, they are helpful. :)

Asalamo alaikom :)

Allah wouldn't test you of something that you can't handle, so try to be patient (i know easy said)... we all go through trials, that's how we become stronger...

"And We tried them with good (blessings) and evil (calamities) in order that they might turn (to Allaah's obedience)." (Al-A'raaf 7: 168).

this paragraph is from post quoted below
"Whoever wants to have everlasting peace and well-being with no affliction does not understand the meaning of Allaah's commandments, nor does he perceive the meaning of submission to Allaah. Every soul (either believing or disbelieving) shall inevitably taste suffering in this world, for this life is based on hardships. Man lives between comfort and suffering.”
so been a non-muslim, you'll still "taste suffering in this world"... with islam in one's heart, one feels comfort and peace of mind no matter what happens, good or bad!!!... May Allah guide us all to the right path...

please take the time to read post below and check this thread for similar posts..."what is your test?"

Trials

Trials

by Imâm al-Madîna al-Munawarrah 'Abdul Muhsin Ibn Muhammad al-Qâsim
Friday Sermon from the Prophet's Mosque in Madina, on 5th Muharram 1422AH
http://www.islaam.net
Al-Jum'ah 5 Muharram, 1422 (20 March, 2001)

All praise is due to Allaah, may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger saws, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as he should be feared, for fear of Allaah brings more blessings and prevents afflictions.

Dear Muslims! Allaah has foreordained the fate of all creatures, written down their impacts and deeds, portioned out between them their livelihood and wealth and created death and life that He may test them which of them is best in deed. Indeed, belief in Allaah's decree and preordainment is one of the pillars of faith. Nothing happens in this universe except by His will.

This life is full of misfortune and sorrow. It is destined to be a place of hardships and trouble. Trials and tribulations are as inevitable in this life as cold and heat. Allaah says,

"And certainly We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to those who are patient."

Pre-destination is a test by which the truthful ones are distinguished from untruthful ones. Allaah says,

"Do people think that they will be left alone because they say, 'We believe,' and will not be tested." (29: 2)

The human soul does not become pure except through trials, and it is during tribulations that real men are known. Ibn Jawzee said,

Man lives between comfort and suffering.

Prophet Aadam, for instance, had the angels prostrated before him and yet was soon after expelled from paradise. A believer is afflicted with trials in order to refine him, not to punish him. He is tested in ease as well as in hardship. Allaah says,

"And We tried them with good (blessings) and evil (calamities) in order that they might turn (to Allaah's obedience)." (Al-A'raaf 7: 168).

Brothers in faith! Something undesireable may sometimes have a pleasant result, while something seemingly desirable may turn out to have an unpleasant and abominable result. Do not therefore feel that harmful things cannot come to you through hardship. Allaah says,

"…And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allaah knows, and you do not know." (Al-Baqarah 2: 216).

Prepare yourself mentally for afflictions before they occur so as to make their occurrence light on you. Do not be worried because of tribulations, for they have their limits, and watch what you utter during your hard times for many a word has ruined its utterer. A resolute Muslim stands firm during hardships, his heart does not change and he does not complain. Console yourself whenever afflicted with a promise of reward from Allaah. Wise people show endurance whenever they are stricken with misfortune so as not to add to their misfortune the malicious joy of their enemies, for whenever your enemies know of your misfortune they are overjoyed.

Brothers in Islaam! Endeavour to keep your misfortunes and pains to yourself, for concealment of afflictions and pains are of the qualities of noble people. Be patient over afflictions, they will soon be removed from you. Those who perished only suffered that because of their impatience while the patient ones are being recompensed with good rewards. Allaah says,

"And those who are patient, we will certainly pay them a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do." (Al-Anaam 16:96).

The reward of the patient ones will be doubled for their patience and Allaah will be with them, remove their afflictions and make them victorious.

O afflicted one! Your Lord does not deny you what you want except what is better than that, He does not test you but for your well-being and He does not subject you to tribulations but to purify you. He tries His slaves with pleasure as he blesses them with calamity. Do not therefore waste your time thinking over what has already been guaranteed for you. As long as one is still alive his provision will no doubt come to him. Allaah ta'ala says,

"And no (moving) living creature is there on earth but its provision is due from Allaah." (Hood 11:6).

Further, if Allaah – out of His wisdom – closes a door against you, He opens out of His mercy a door better for you than the closed one. It is by afflictions that righteous and understanding people are increased in rank and reward. Sa'ad bin Abee Waqqaas said

: I said, "O Messenger of Allaah, who are the most afflicted of all people? He replied saws, "The Prophets, then the righteous people, then those who are nearest to them in perfection and those who are nearest to them. Man is tested according to his religiosity; if he is strong religiously, his test is increased and if he is weak in religion, his test is reduced And a believer will be tested until he walks on the earth sinless [i.e. his sins have been erased by series of afflictions that he endured.]" (Al-Bukhari)

Fellow Muslims! Prophet Aadam laboured along difficult paths beset with affliction; Prophet Ibraheem was thrown into a blazing fire; Ismaeel was laid down for slaughter; Yoonus was swallowed by a whale; Prophet Aayoob suffered from a severe illness; Yoosuf was sold for a pittance, thrown into a well and wrongfully jailed and Muhammed saws suffered different kinds of injury. You also are in path of calamities moving, for the life does not give pleasure only to anyone. The Prophet saws said,

"If Allaah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials." (Al-Bukharee).

Some people of knowledge said,

"Whoever Allaah creates for paradise will be having trials and undesirable things."

Real trial, dear brothers, is the trial in one's religion and whatever trial besides that is regarded as well being, for it raises one in the rank and erases ones sins. Also all comforts that do not bring one closer to Allaah is a tribulation. Do not therefore grieve over what you miss in worldly materials, for worldly pleasure begets pain and disobedience. Aboo Dardaa said,

"Of the insignificance of this world to Allaah is that He is not disobeyed except in it, while what is with Him cannot be obtained except by abstaining from it. Engage yourself in what will benefit you more. Keep away from what is in peoples' hands you will be the wealthiest of them; do not lose hope in Allaah's mercy lest you are disgraced; always remember Allaah's favour on you and drive away your distress by being pleased with Allaah's decree, for however long the night may be, it will be followed by the dawn. Supplicate to Allaah. He will give you relief and if you are patient Allaah will provide a way out for you. Ponder over the story of Prophet Ya'qoob who lost a son for a long period and yet did not lose hope of relief from the Almighty One, but rather said, "Maybe Allaah will bring them all (back) to me."

Dear brother! It is only Allaah who deserves all praise and is capable of attending to all complaints. It is only Him you must beseech to remove your misfortunes. Pray to Him during the night with submission and humbleness and request Him to make your affairs easy for you. He says,

"Is it not He who responds to the distressed one when he calls Him (better than your gods.)" (27: 62)

Put your trust in the Omnipotent Lord and take refuge with Him with a humble heart, He will open the doors of His mercy for you. Fudayl ben 'Iyaadh said,

"If you lose hope in all people and you do not ask anything from them, your Lord will give you all that you want."

Whoever leaves his affairs to the hands of Allaah will achieve what he aspires: Always recite the prayer of Prophet Yoonus:

لا إله إلا أنت سبحانك إني كنت من الظالمين

"None has the right to worshipped except You (O Allaah) Glorifed (and exalted) are You (above all that they associate with You) Truly I have been of the wrong doers."

The 'Ulamaa said,

"No one In distress recites this prayer except that Allaah gives him relief from his distress."

Ibn al-Qayyim said, "It has been tested that whoever says:

إني مسني الضر و أنت أرحم الراحمين

"Verily distress has seized me and You are the most merciful of all those who show mercy!"

Seven times Allaah relieves him of his distress! Put then yourself under the protection of Allaah, depend upon Him, submit your affairs to Him and ask Him for relief. Try to supplicate in the most appropriate periods like during prostration and the last hour of the night. Do not feel uneasy if your supplications have not yet been answered, and do not lose hope of Allaah's mercy even though the period of your affliction may seem long, for relief is near, and continue to pray to Allaah. Also know that when Allaah afflicts you no one except Him is capable of removing that affliction for He does whatever He wills.

If your provision seems delayed, do a lot of istighfar, for misdeeds necessitate punishment; and if it does not seem that your supplications are having any impact, then examine yourself, for it may be that you have not been sincere in your repentance. Endeavour also, to give charity to the needy, for charity prevents and removes affliction. However, if your affliction is removed, give a lot of thanks and praise to your Lord and know that a false sense of safety is a big trial. Allaah says,

"Say: Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allaah has ordained for us. He is our Lord and Protector, and in Alaah let the believers put their trust." (At-Taubah 9: 51).

Dear Muslims! No condition is permanent. Fortunate is he who is always God-conscious. Fear Allaah in any condition you may find yourself. You can do nothing to prevent what has been destined to happen as you do nothing to attain what has not been pre-ordained. The ability to choose and control is with Allaah alone and His choice for His slave is better for him than his choice for himself. Dawood bin Sulaymaan said,

"Three things indicate the piety of a believer; his trust in Allah in what he has not attained; his satisfaction with whatever he has attained and his patience over what he has missed."

A wise man was asked,

"What is wealth?" He replied, "Fewness of one's mundane desires and one's contentment with what suffices him."

Shurayh said,

"A slave will not be afflicted by a trial except that he finds three blessings therein, (1) that the trial has nothing to do with his religion, (2) that the trial was not bigger than it is, and (3) that Allaah gives him patience to bear it."

Islam mean to bend down/ bow/ submit to Allah and then Muhammad Rasulullah by our heart. (If our heart just submit so far so good, and this is enough, we could called us as muslims). People will submit if they accepted benefit, and they could reminding those benefit. If we want to be a muslims just enough for us to see mostly the goodness of islam taught.

But if we want to increase our position (by the view of Allah). We should get the higher stage then muslim, we called this 'iman.' Iman doesn't just submit but we must also had believe.
People who already had believe/iman could called as 'mukmins.' Mukmins is higher than muslims. If we want to get believe we must also have knowledges comprehensively. its proud for me if i can reach 'mukmin' by all of my heart.
Now maybe i still maintaining my muslim ideology.
So i think you don't need to be 100% believe to become muslim. 100% believe then we could reach mukmins. But we need to understand all of knowledges those possible there in the universe. Its so heavy

Salamalaykum,

Masha Allah glad to c people like u both Zilliz and Hannabanu who has the strength and courage to search for truth.

To be a muslim u only need to belive that God is one and Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) is seal of prophethood (last messanger from Allah).

About the Evolution THEORY not FACT, which is in controductiction with islam point of view. Zilliz before there are many theories which contradicts with Islamic point of view and later they (the theories contradicting with Islam point of view) proved false for example SHAPE OF EARTH. Every thing revolve in its own axis. About the water cycle. and there are many many more theories which has contradiction with Islam they proven wrong later by the garce and mercy of Allah. and Alhumdolila till now there is not a single thing proven wrong which is Quran says. So with this statistics we belive sooon insha Allah v can see this theory of Evolution will also be proven wrong insha Allah.

Zilliz just for your information I am a born muslim and know 27 years and Alhomdolila still every day i learn something more about Islam. Learning is a life long process.

Allah has showered his mercy on you and showen u the light of Islam, so grabe it as soon as u can as v dont know what will come to us tomorrow next moment and may Allah end all of us on IMAN. Ameen.

Please feel free to ask any question or share ur knowledge about Islam as it will improve us for the sake of Allah. Insha Allah here Brother and Sisters will try our best to answer you in the light of Quran and Sunnah. Hope your problem of posting hav been solved by now insha Allah. If not then let us know with more detail insha Allah we will try to sort it out.

Hope insha Allah I will hear a very very good and blessed news from you.

May Allah help us and guide all of us to the path of Truth and safe us from Hell Fire. Ameen.
