can there be a question of the increase and decrease in the faith.

shukran.

:wasalam:

Of course, faith = belief + statements + Actions. And when one sins, faith does decrease and by doing good deeds, it does increase. In general, when we go away from obedience to Allah and the Messenger :saw2:, faith decreases and being obedient increases the faith.

I do not know much arabic, but I once asked a brother from KSA to explain what "qalb"(heart) really meant etymologically,he told me it's something that flips constantly or changes state constantly.
He explained to me a hadith:

The Messenger of Allaah :saw: said: "“In the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, the entire body will be sound, and if it is corrupt, the entire body will be corrupt. Indeed it is the heart.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 52; Muslim, 1599).

Thus explainig the du'a that prophet :saw: said often:

"Ya Muqallibal-Qulub, thabbit qalbi `ala deenak"
(Oh Controller of the hearts, make my heart firm on Your Religion.)

Thus heart is a thing which changes constantly and Allah is the controller of hearts so we pray to Him to make our hearts steadfast on deen.
And Allah knows best.
