There is no such thing of ghosts, after we die our souls are locked in Al-Barzakh. It's only the jinn trying to scare them. A dead person's Qareen can appear as the dead person. The jinn companion is with you until you die so it knows you well.

I've always wondered why does the Jinn companion stay with us all the time? I mean, angels stay to record our deeds, so the Jinn stays just to whisper to us all the time - has it no business of its own?

What do you mean by "A dead person's Qareen can appear as the dead person"?

The Qareen is made to do whisper bad things, the Prophet :saw: had a jinn companion who submitted to Islam and only whispers good.

If Allah wills, the Qareen will continue to live when you die. It has lived with you since you were born so it knows you well. Sometimes, a person who deals with jinns can get the Qareen to appear as their human companion, and as I said before, knows the person well.

According to a lecture that was shared on this site by a brother, the Qareen of the Prophet :saw: is still alive, and sometimes when a jinn converts to Islam, they'd go to him. Since that Qareen knows the Prophet :saw: best, it would be cool to ask it about things such as prayer, so there wouldn't be different opinions on how. The lecture is here (there are nine other parts, the jinn is named Abdullah Hakim who is a prince from India): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk51OizBdTo

Brother Abdullah refers back to the Sunnah, such as why the Prophet :saw: let Aisha radi Allahu anha play with a doll and didn't tell her to get rid of it and why we should wash our beds after abandoning it after a while.
