Tamil family proud of son's 'sacrifice'

The UK-based family of a young Tamil man who set himself on fire in protest at the treatment of his countrymen in Sri Lanka have said they are proud of his actions.

Thousands of Tamils living in the UK and beyond are expected to attend the funeral on Saturday in Northolt, west London, of Murugathasan Varnakulasingham, 26, who travelled to Switzerland last month to kill himself in front of the United Nations building in Geneva.

Mr Varnakulasingham, a computing graduate who worked part-time in a supermarket, had attended demonstrations to protest against the Sri Lankan military's war against the Tamils, an ethnic minority who are fighting for their independence.

Thousands of people are have been killed, and thousands more displaced on the island since fighting escalated after 2005.

I decided to sacrifice my life ... The flames over my body will be a torch to guide you through the liberation path
Murugathasan Varnakulasingham's suicide letter

Mr Varnakulasingham's brother-in-law Thavaroopan Sinnathamby, 33, said: "He was a very lovely guy and we miss him a lot, but he did this for the country.

"He was a sensitive guy. He was a refugee in his own country before he came here, so he knew the pain of what the people were going through.

"He'd go to the demonstrations and no-one was bothering and he wanted to make an impact. I think he wanted to give his life, we feel proud for that."

Before he doused himself in petrol and set himself alight in the the Place des Nations in Geneva., Mr Varnakulasingham wrote a five-page letter.

It read: "We Tamils, displaced and all over the world, loudly raised our problems and asked for help before [the] international community in your own language for three decades.

"But nothing happened... So I decided to sacrifice my life... The flames over my body will be a torch to guide you through the liberation path."

Copycat suicides

The young man's family, said Mr Sinnathamby, did not know in advance of his suicide plans.

He said: "We had no idea. If we did know, we would not have let him go."

He said the first they heard there was something wrong was when friends and family started calling up asking where he was.

Then friends started calling to say they had seen his brother-in-law's name on the internet.

The family checked online and on a Tamil news website, where they saw his name and date of birth.

"Unfortunately, it was true," said Mr Sinnathamby.

Mr Varnakulasingham's death appears to have inspired at least one other "copycat" suicide attempt in the UK - a man thought to be a Tamil who tried to set himself alight outside Downing Street last month.

Security tight

Previously there were at least two other reported incidents of attempted self-immolation in the UK by Tamils, and there have also been more than a dozen other suicides-by-fire in India and worldwide.

Organisers of Saturday's funeral in Northolt are expecting large numbers of Tamils to attend.

There are estimated to be about 250,000 Tamils living in the UK - many of them refugees of Sri Lanka's decades-long civil war between the Tamil Tigers and the majority Sinhalese government.

Thaya Idaikkadar, chairman of the British Tamil Councillors and Associates group said security at the funeral would be tight

He said stewards would be checking attendees for petrol cans, following concerns expressed by the police over further copycat suicide attempts.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said it was aware of the plans for a large funeral, but had issued no specific guidance.

the sri lankan government and tamil tigers are fighting in the jungle. the people are as oppressed as the palestinians. but ofcourse western media will neither show palestinians nor tamils.

the guy must have gotten the idea from The Burning Monk in 1963. Thich Quang Duc. i can only imagine what his last moments must have been like, seeing the Angle of Death approach for his soul.

ofcourse unlike these people, suicide is forbidden in our religion. we believe that Allah will have His Retribution with the tyrants.

well it makes sense to me on WHY he did so. The guy was fed up with no one doing anything and sadly taking away his life in a brutal way wasn't the way to go but what can one say when one isn't Muslim? Sometimes teaching a tyrant takes a lot and this guy thought his life will do so... Who knows?

May Allah save us from the tyrants and save all those who are oppressed.

Priest burns himself to death over Islam

Priest burns himself to death over Islam

From David Crossland in Berlin

A retired priest committed suicide by setting himself on fire in a German monastery in protest at the spread of Islam and the Protestant Church’s inability to contain it.

Roland Weisselberg, 73, poured a can of petrol over his head and set light to himself in the grounds of the Augustine monastery in the eastern city of Erfurt, where Martin Luther spent six years as a monk at the beginning of the 16th century.

Witnesses said that Weisselberg climbed into a building site next to the monastery church, where a Reformation Day service was being held. He shouted “Jesus and Oskar” before the flames engulfed him. The latter name was an apparent reference to Oskar Brüsewitz, a priest who burnt himself in 1976 in protest against the Communist regime in East Germany. Monastery staff tried to put out the flames and Weisselberg was still conscious as a nun prayed with him before he was taken to hospital. He died a day later, on Wednesday.

Media reports said that he had tried to kill himself inside the church but changed his mind when he found the side door was locked.

The Provost of Erfurt, Elfriede Begrich, told reporters that Weisselberg’s widow had said that he killed himself because he was alarmed at the spread of Islam and the Church’s stance on the issue.

She described Weisselberg as an erudite man who had addressed repeatedly the Church’s position on Islam in meetings over the past three to four years. He had written to her, urging her to take the matter more seriously, she said.

The Protestant Bishop of Saxony, Axel Noack, said the suicide had shocked the community and that he hoped it would not hurt relations between Christians and Muslims.

“We in the East are still among ourselves when we discuss Islam,” said Bishop Noack, adding that there were not many Muslims in the area.

Relations with Muslims have been a matter of intense debate in Germany in recent months, stoked by the cancellation of a Mozart opera in Berlin amid fears that it could provoke Muslim violence, and a speech by the Pope in September in which he quoted from a medieval text linking the spread of the Islamic faith to violence.

The Berlin Deutsche Oper has said that it will stage the opera, which has a scene showing the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad, Jesus and Buddha.

The tamil story above can simply be compared to a palestinian or iraqi sucide bomber, in the view of westernisers, they cannot understand why someone would act in this way, futile attempt which results in a waste of life.

Here to help
If you thought that was strange, how about this? A Christian priest in Germany had been noticing that his Sunday audience got smaller and smaller every week. He knew most of these people by first name. He started to ask about them and to his shock, all of them have converted to Islam. So, what does he do? He killed himself!
+1 i remember seeing that on the news, I was shocked! Crazy coatic world

I THINK he burnt himself to death!!
