Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi: there is no Israeli partner for peace or justice

The Palestinian Minister of Information in the new national unity government, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, returned the phrase often used by the Israelis in the media against the Palestinians. They say, “There is no Palestinian partner.”

That has been said during every government, to each president to excuse not negotiating or not honoring past agreements. On Thursday, however, Dr. Barghouthi said what history supports while looking at the Israeli track record. “There is no Israeli partner."

The prominent leftist also told reporters today that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is “weak and incapable of initiating genuine peace.”

He used the current assaults as confirmation that the Israeli government seeks to sabotage unity government efforts to strengthen internal security and control.

The unity government is struggling to not be forced to repeat what the Hamas government did. Once elected, Hamas had no ability to govern as the political and economic blockade was imposed the moment the party took office. Its members were arrested one by one. The unity government is continuing the internal law and order campaign, while at the same time moving toward a comprehensive period of external calm.

Dr. Barghouthi added that the continued Israeli aggression “represents an attempt to evade responding to the Arab Peace Initiative or invitations from the Palestine Liberation Organization to hold an international conference.” He said that the Israelis have looked for diversions while attacking cities and shutting down internal Palestinian security, such as in Tulkarem. He said that they “seek a replacement by normalizing relations with Arab countries without ending the occupation or honoring the rights of the Palestinian people to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.”

The Information Minister issued a condemnation of Israeli forces' attacks on Palestinians and called on international parties to intervene to stop such violations of international law, "instead of pressuring the Palestinian government."
