What is the difference between Dreams from Allah, and dreams from our nafs?

If we are going through a difficult time and asking Allah SWT for answers and guidance, and we receive a clear, concise dream that is very comforting, is that a dream from the nafs or a dream for Allah comforting me? It is so hard for me to distinguish, but deep in my heart I want to believe that Allah SWT is trying to comfort me. Perhaps, that is wishful thinking?

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (radhiyallaahu anh) reported:

I heard the Prophet saying,

"When one of you sees a dream that he likes, then it is from Allah. He should praise Allah for it and relate it to (others).

Another narration adds:

Messenger of Allah said,

"He should not report it except to those whom he loves. And if he sees one which he dislikes, then it is from the Satan. He should seek refuge in Allah against its evil and should not mention it to anyone. Then it will not harm him. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary: There are clear instructions from Messenger of Allah about both good and bad dreams. A good dream means a good news sent by Allah to a person who has seen it. It should be related only to those who are close to his heart and not to such people who may start nourishing malice against him like the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joesph). A bad dream should be attributed to Satan and not be described to others because it often causes one to be pessimistic and it may be taken as a bad omen, which is not allowed in Islam. Rather, a man should seek Allah's Refuge against its evil. And if he puts faith in Allah, no harm will come to him.

Abu Qatadah (radhiyallaahu anh) reported:

The Prophet said,

"A good vision (dream) is from Allah and a bad dream is from the Satan. He who sees something in a dream that he dislikes, should blow thrice on his left, must seek Allah's Refuge from the evil of the Satan (i.e. by saying: A'udhu billahi minash-Shaytanir-Rajim). Then it will not harm him." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary: As mentioned in the preceding Hadith, there are good dreams and bad dreams. This Hadith shows us what to do in order to avoid the evil of Satan who cannot harm anyone except by Allah's leave.

Jabir (radhiyallaahu anh) reported:

Messenger of Allah ,

"When one of you sees a bad dream let him blow three times on his left, seek refuge in Allah from the Satan three times (i.e. by saying: A'udhu billahi minash-Shaytanir-Rajim) and change the side on which he was lying." [Muslim]

Commentary: This Hadith makes an addition to the preceding ones, that is, on seeing a bad dream, one should change his side. If he is lying on his right side, he should turn to the left, and vice-versa. By this precaution Allah will turn a bad dream into a good by His leave.

Question

I had an uncle who used to hate me and couldn't stand me when he was alive; he also used to hit me. Nowadays, I see him in very disquieting dreams: he is running after my daughter and I, but he is not able to catch up as I escape from him. Please tell something that will comfort me.

Answer

This dream, and others like it that are hateful and scary are from the Shaytaan. A Muslim who sees this kind of vision, should spit toward the left three times and then he should seek refuge in Allah three times from the Shaytaan and from the evil that he saw.

Next, he should turn on his other side - thus the vision will not harm him. He should also not tell anybody about this dream, for the Messenger of Allah said in an authentic Hadeeth,

"A good dream is from Allah, a (bad) dream is from the Shaytaan. In one of you sees something he hates, he should spit three times to his left, he should seek refuge in Allah three times from the Shaytaan and from the evil that he saw, and then he should turn over to his other side. Then it will not harm him, and he should not tell anybody about it. If he sees something he loves, he should praise Allah and inform somebody he loves about it."

Don't worry to much about dreams. Follow the advice and Insha'Allaah you will feel better - don't worry about any general dreams. If it falls under a particular category; happy (from Allah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) or bad (from Shaytaan), then refer to the above.
