    A'salam alaikum wa'ra. wa'ba.!

I can't help but to ask, who do we say to: A'salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi in prayer? I think we are saying it to the prophet, but in that case why? Because, the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) can not hear us, only Subhanna wa ta'ala. Anybody thought about this? I think about it at times.

    A'salam alaikum wa'ra. wa'ba.!

One time the prophet was passing by a graveyard and he said something to the buried there. The Sahaaba were surprised and asked him, "Do they hear us, o Messenger of God?" He replied, "You do not hear me better than they do!"[/QUOTE]

    :salam2:

    Allah orders us:

God sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet (Muhammad) and also His angels too (ask God to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask God to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu 'Alaikum). [33:56]

    Al-Ahzaab(33) ayah 56

There are many hadeeth as well

I found the second one but the first one u mentioned I was not able to. Of course I am searching in english and the names are usually spelled differently.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 2 Number 456

    Narrated Anas bin Malik

Allah's Apostle said, "When (Allah's) slave is put in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask, 'What did you use to say about this man (i.e. Muhammad)?' The faithful believer will say, 'I testify that he is Allah's slave and His Apostle.' Then they will say to him, 'Look at your place in the Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' So he will see both his places." (Qatada said, "We were informed that his grave would be made spacious." Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;: Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, "What did you use to say about this man." He will reply, "I do not know; but I used to say what the people used to say." So they will say to him, "Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Qur'an)." Then he will be hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to him will hear, except Jinns and human beings. (See Hadith No. 422).

As you were saying here is another hadith about making salaam:

    Sahih Muslim Number 483
    Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them when they went out to the graveyard. One of the narrators used to say this in the narration transmitted on the authority of AbuBakr: "Peace be upon the inhabitants of the city (i.e. graveyard)". In the hadith transmitted by Zuhayr (the words are):"Peace be upon you, the inhabitants of the city, among the believers, and Muslims, and God willing we shall join you. I beg of Allah peace for us and for you.

I hope this didn't take away from the original post question.

    Assalaamu'alaykum

Isn't the brother referring to the Tasleem rather than what is said in Tashahhud? In which case I don't know who it may be directed at, maybe the angels on each shoulder? Allaahu'Alam

Salaam Aleykom, if you are talking about when we turn to each side and say the salaams, they are to the angels on each side. The one that records your good works and the one who records your bad works. It is not to the prophet(saaws). As for Tashahud, this was between the prophet and this is how he made salaat. We were simply ordered to do the same during salaat.

    A'Salam alaikum wa'ra. wa'ba.!

Yes, I think it's essential to know what we are doing. I beleive in Subhana wa ta'ala and I beleive Islam is full of answers. As we know Aisha, asked the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) countless questions. Jazak Allah for clearing both things for me, because I kind of wondered about the Tashahhud too, but my question was about going left and right. I'm grateful for your help, may Allah bring us all brothers and sisters to Paradise. Ameen

    this is the right one.

    as salaamualaikom,
if you are rerefering to,when we turn each side and say AS SALAAMUALAIKOM WA REHMATULLAH,they are the angels on each side that we greet.the one who records our good work and the one who records our bad work.it is not to the prophet(saw).
hope this answers to the question.
