Environment authority in Gaza investigating possible radiation from Israeli military sites
Date: 20 / 10 / 2008 Time: 18:38
Gaza – Ma’an – The Palestinian Environmental Quality Authority announced the beginning of a field survey on Monday to measure the effects of nuclear radiation, possibly emanating from Israeli military facilities, in the eastern Gaza Strip.
Yousef Al-Ghraiz, the head of the environment authority said the survey was commissioned in response to media reports of children and animals, among them a headless sheep, born with physical deformities which some believe could be caused by radiation in the area bordering Israel.
There have been reports that the Israeli military is storing nuclear waste in the area in violation of international law, with possible harmful effects for the environment and public health.
Al-Ghriaz said that if radiation levels are found to exceed international standards, the harmful effects will be felt throughout the Gaza Strip, not just on the eastern border.
Al-Ghriaz noted that there are other reasons for children to be born with deformities including marriage within the family, chemical insecticides used on area farms, and certain chemicals found in detergent.
