The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah (the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar) is the day of 'Arafah.

Abû Hafsah, may Allâh be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said:

"Fasting on the day of 'Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year, and fasting on 'ashûra, (the tenth day of Muharram) atones for the sins of previous years." [Reported by all except al-Bukhârî and Tirmidhî][/SIZE
In another saying the Prophet's wife Hafsah, may Allâh be pleased with her, said:

"Four things the Messenger of Allâh never neglected: Observing fast on the day of 'ashûra, 'Arafat, three days every month, and offering fajr sunnah prayers early in the morning." [Muslim]

Abdullah ibn-`Umar reported that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

“There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days. So, during this time, recite a great deal of tahlil (saying Laa ilaaha illa-Allah: ‘there is no god but Allah’), takbeer and tahmeed.” (Reported by Ahmad.)
Dear sisters and brothers

let me me remind you and i that we should benefit from these ten days by doing good deeds such as Cleansening our hearts and reconciling to those who harm us.Let fast, read Quran, celebrate the remembrance of Allah, putting smile on the lips of orphans, needy, the sick.Let alleviate the pain of those who are in need.If you are sick, have problems at home at work, if you encounter what ever obstacles give a charity or serve Man, Allah will send tranquility in u heart.A man whom i know told me when i help a widow or orphans, my wife obeys me and i experience happiness for days.
Eid is the day of happiness and joy ,so do not forget to visit u relatives and help them .
May Allah reward you and have mercy on us.

Concerning fasting the day of arafah .It is known when pilgrims stand in the mountain of arafa in the nineth day in the holy land .
As for eid each country should follow the imam or the ruler and should not offer sacrifice till the imam prays salat el eid

Asalaamu Alaikum, The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah including Eid Ul Adha are most blessed and Allah also mentions these days at the beginning of Surah Fajr and also swears upon them which shows their significance.

The first ten nights of this month are the nights to be worshipped and the first 9 days are the days to be fasted because the tenth day if Eid ul Adha and of course it is forbidden to fast on Eid.

The day before Eid ul Adha which is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is the day of Arafaat and that is the most blessed of the 9 days to fast.

In the UK today was the first day of Dhul Hijjah and last night was the first night so there are 9 nights still remaining for us to worship and 8 days remaining for us to fast and gain IMMENSE rewards.

If one does not fast on the first 9 days then one should at least fast on the 9th of Dhul Hijjag which is the day of Arafaat. The day of Arafaat will be next Monday in the UK and Eid Ul Adha will be Tuesday inshallah. So et us fast all of the remaining days and worship all of the remaining nights until Eid. Hope that clarifies things.

To make the best of these blessed days and nights please refer to this thread:

It is Sunnah for the Muslim to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged us to do righteous deeds in the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, and fasting is one of the best of deeds, which Allaah has chosen for Himself as it says in the hadeeth qudsi: “Allaah says: ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1805.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah. It was narrated from Hunaydah ibn Khaalid from his wife, that one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah and the day of ‘Ashoora’, and three days each month, the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays. Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 4/205 and by Abu Dawood; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2/462.
