History:

Many centuries ago, missionaries sailed the width and length of the Malay Archipelago to disseminate words of Islam to the inhabitants of these lands. They plied far and wide, with tremendous energy and devotion to fulfil their call of duty.

One day, a group of missionaries came by the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia on the way from Pattani(Southern Thailand) to Java(in Indonesia) or vice versa as there are many differing point of references. The seafarers' boat unfortunately sprung a leak along the way. As the boat floundered helplessly, the missionaries made a vow that if they were to survive such a catastrophe and were safely brought to shore, they would immediately build a mosque to commemorate the miraculous journey. Indeed their prayers were answered and the missionaries safely landed at Kampung Laut (Sea Village).

Special highlights:

- Located at Kampung Laut, Kelantan the Islamic City. The oldest mosque/masjid in Malaysia. It was built in the 1730's.
- Architectural styles influenced by factors such as climatic conditions, availability of building materials, ethnic background and local craftsmanship.
- The mosque/masjid was raised on stilts about 1m above ground because it located near to riverbank. This allows natural ventilation and cools the internal parts.
- Four main columns support the upper most roof which is separated from the lower double-tiered roofs by timber louvres. This gap provides natural cross ventilation in the central area and also admits light.
- Building was covered with tiered roofs and the tiles made from natural ceramic. This naturally cools the space beneath even thou under hot sun. So it does not have air-conditioner since it cools moderately.
- The original mosque before any renovation taken was put together without hammering a single nail. It is example like piecing a "lego" collection together.

A state where religion is held close to it's people's hearts, the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque, or also referred to as the Floating Mosque, is one of the icons of Islam in the state. Built from an idea birthed by the late Sultan of Terengganu, Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, this mosque was named after his mother, Tuanku Intan Zaharah binti Almarhum Tengku Seri Setia Raja.

The mosque is located in Teluk Ibai, just over 4km away from Kuala Terengganu town centre, quite close to the beautiful beach of Terengganu's coast. The white structure of the mosque gorunds covers and area of roughly 5 acres and serves a number of villages nearby. Construction of the mosque began in 1991, designed by celebrated architect, Raja Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad.

The beauty of its architecture and serenity of its surrounding landscape, also draws a great number of visitors to Terengganu who take the opportunity to perform their prayers and take a breather from their journey at this mosque. The design of the mosque reflects a subtle Islamic influence combined with local features, incorporating the use of marble, ceramics, mosaic works and bomanite paving. . The entire mosque covers 25,282 square feet - large enough to accommodate between 800 to 1,000 people at once - and the minaret stands 125 feet tall. Constructed with a lake surrounding it, much like a moat, the mosque is popularly referred to as the Floating Mosque. With the backdrop of the open SoutH China Sea, this mosque is an irresistable attraction to visitors in Terengganu.
