WASHINGTON (AFP) - A former US soldier has been charged in court with killing four Iraqi civilians, after having raped one of the female murder victims, the Justice Department said.
The government said in a statement that the former soldier, Steven Green, who had served with the US Army's 101st Airborne Division, was arrested on Friday for his alleged involvement in the killings and sexual assault near Mahmudiayh, in Iraq on March 12.
The charges allege that "Green and three other individuals went to a house in the vicinity of Traffic Control Point 1, near Mahmudiayh, to rape one of the adult females living there," the Justice Department said.
"Green allegedly shot and killed an adult male, an adult female and a female child who were present in the house. The charges also allege that after participating in the rape of the second adult female, Green shot and killed her," the statement said.
The 21 year-old ex-soldier had an initial court appearance in a federal court in Charlotte, North Carolina, Monday and is expected to be sent to Kentucky for further proceedings.
If convicted, Green could face the death penalty for the murders and a life sentence for the alleged rape.
