Gratitude and the Humbleness of Umar

Gratitude:

"Umar ibn Al-Khattab once passed by a man who was supplicating, 'O Allah, make us of Your ‘few’ servants! O Allah make us of Your ‘few’ servants!'

Umar said to him, 'Where did you get this dua from?' And the man said, 'Allah in His Book says ‘And few of My servants are grateful’ (34:13).'

So ‘Umar wept and admonished himself, saying: 'The people are more knowledgeable than you, O Umar! O Allah make us of Your ‘few’ servants.”

Personal Comment: It is one thing to reflect on the goodness of the episode and feel happy about it but leave it at that; it is however quite another to learn from it, in this case memorise it in Arabic, make it a part of your regular supplications day in day out and more importantly for our future investment and responsibilities to our fellow Muslims, tell as many people as possible about it. That way we earn ourselves a precious fountain that will continue gushing water even when we personally are no longer present to sustain it (physically).
