hadith: Women's hair style not allowed

islamerica

1 Ummah under God
Narrated Abu Hurayrah

Allah's Apostle said: There are two types, amongst the denizens of Hell, I have yet not seen them. One possessing whips like the tail of an ox and they flog people with them. (The second one) the women who would be naked in spite of their being dressed, who are seduced (to wrong paths) and seduce others with their hair high like humps. These women would not get into Paradise and they would not perceive the fragrance of Paradise, although its fragrance can be perceived from such and such distance (from great distance).

I heard we're not allowed to tie our hair in a bun because of this hadeeth. Is there differences of opinion regarding this or do all scholars have the same view?

A bun?

When I think of the whole "humps" deal I think of Amy Winehouse's hairstyle. I've seen Muslimahs do this hairstyle under their headscarf. No idea why since it looks asinine.

wa'alaikum as'salaam,

I haven't come across any other different opinion on this matter. In fact, we don't need "opinions" at all, the hadith speaks for itself. Some hadith you need scholar's help in explanation while others, like this one, is pretty straight forward and explanatory.

Here's a commentary on it though:

With regard to the phrase Ru’oosahunna ka asnimat il-bukht (translated here as “with something on their heads that looks like the humps of camels”), this may mean that they make their heads look bigger with veils and turbans, which are wrapped around the head, so that they look like the humps of camels. This is the well-known interpretation. Al-Maaziri said: it may be that what is meant is that they will not lower their gaze in the presence of men, rather they will look directly at them.

This hadeeth contains a stern warning against committing these two sins:
1- Oppressing the people and striking them unlawfully
2- Women making a wanton display of themselves and showing their charms and not adhering to correct Islamic hijab and noble Islamic manners.

I also found more hadith on this:

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said,

"There will be in the latter part of my nation women who will be dressed yet undressed. Their heads will resemble the humps of camels. Curse them, for indeed they are accursed. They will not be admitted to Paradise nor smell its fragrance."

Combined report by at-Tabaraanee and Muslim

Usaamah bin Zaid said,

"Allaah's Messenger gave me a dense Coptic cloth to wear which he was given as a gift from Dihyah Al-Kalbee. So I dressed my wife with it. So the Messenger said, 'Why have you not worn that Coptic garment?' I replied, 'I clothed my wife with it.' So he said, 'Command her to wear a garment underneath it, for I fear it will reveal the size of her bones (i.e. her bodily parts)'."

Reported by Ahmad and Al-Bayhaqee

Umm 'Attiyah,

"The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), commanded us to go to out on al-Fitr and al-Adha (to the morning 'Eid prayer)... So I said, 'O Allaah's Messenger! If one of us does not have a Jilbaab?' He replied, 'Let her wear the Jilbaab of her sister.'"

I don't know anything about hair in a bun, I do know that there is a hairstyle called a 'beehive' which has to do with 'ratting' or deliberately tangling the hair into a sort of large hump on top of the head, and which is rather unsanitary, because it is deliberately never untangled, so is hard to get washed properly.

That's what I thought as well.

We all know there is hikmah for everything. So I just want to know, why is a woman cursed and will go to hell if she ties her hair in a bun? What's the hikmah behind this hadith?
