Assalmualaykum
I would like to know how halaal and haraam food is regulated in other countries. How does one know what they can eat or not eat? Do you have different bodies/organisations that regulate what can/cannot be eaten or one central organisation?
In SA, we have like 5 or 6 different organisations that regulate what can/cannot be eaten. In many instances many of these organisations differ on whether certain products/food etc can be eaten or not. Every now and again these different organisations have conflicting views and are at loggerheads with one another. It has come to a point where certain people follow one of these organisations and they do not eat at certain places unless that organisation which they follow has certified them as halaal, they refuse to eat there even if the person is a muslim or he has been certified as halaal by one of the other organisations. Many of the muslim businesses that sell food items have to get a certificate from one of these organisations certifying them as halaal, if they dont have one then many of the people do not buy or eat from there even if they are muslim.
Jazakallah
