Asalaamu alaikum... Today I saw a couple things at the masjid that I don't understand. I've seen them before, but without a permanent shaykh there's nobody to ask.
1) the "kiss then thump the head with the Qu'ran" ritual. I see this frequently. A bro will get a copy of the Qur'an from the book case, kiss it, then thump his forehead with it. Over and over, usually keeping up until he returns to his seat... kiss thump, kiss thump, kiss thump...I can't find anything in the sunnah to instruct us to do this; but then again, the written form of the Qur'an came later, didn't it?
2) crossing the hands over the left breast. I've seen a couple brothers do this. After the iqama but before the takbirat ihram they stand with their hands upraised like a Baptist minister, then they fold their hands over their left breast or on the left side of their ribcage. At the "ameen" after the Al Fatihah they raise their eyes to the ceiling. Normally if I see just one person doing something I think maybe he just doesn't know the right way of doing salaat. But when I see more than two doing it I wonder if its a sect or a different group.
Any ideas?
Thank you - jazakAllah khair
