Hollywood producer plans Prophet Mohamad film

DUBAI (Agencies)

A movie drama about the life of the Prophet Mohammad is to go into production soon, and will be only the second English-language film of its kind ever made, according to details unveiled in Dubai Monday.

"The Messenger of Peace" will be a remake of Moustapha Akkad's "The Message", a 1977 Hollywood classic starring Anthony Quinn which is often applauded by Muslims as an example of how commercial Western cinema can respect Islam.

" Since 9/11, Islam's image has suffered tremendously…Now more than ever it has become important to bridge the gap of understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims. "
Hajja Subhia Abu Elheja
Oscar Zoghbi, who worked with Akkad on "The Message," said he the "utmost respect for Akkad's work but technology in cinema has advanced since the 1970s and this latest project will employ modern film techniques in its renewal of the first film's core messages."

The new film "is not about division and conflict but will focus wholly on the rich values common to all Muslims, like compassion and tolerance," Zoghbi said.

Having worked with Akkad Zoghbi said he appreciates the sensitivities and challenges linked with the subject of Islam.

In the original "Message", the Prophet and his companions were heard speaking off-camera but never directly shown, in accordance with Muslim conventions forbidding their visual depiction.

"Since 9/11, Islam's image has suffered tremendously," said Hajja Subhia Abu Elheja, an international film financier and executive producer of the new movie. "Now more than ever it has become important to bridge the gap of understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims."

"It is telling that only one great historical film has ever been made about Islam, a religion with 1.5 billion followers, whereas Christianity has been the subject of over 30," he said.

Hollywood director Ramsey Thomas, also linked with "Halloween" and with other films like "Boiling Point", will write the script for the new film, which will be shot in English but dubbed into other languages, in particular Arabic.

"In the 21st century there is a real need for a film that emotionally engages audiences on the journey that led to the birth of Islam," a media statement quoted Thomas as saying.

The events of the Prophet's life took place mainly in the holy Islamic cities of Mecca and Medina, which are now located in modern Saudi Arabia.

Akkad, the Syrian-born executive producer who also produced Hollywood's "Halloween" horror films, was killed in a suicide bomb attack by al Qaeda on a luxury hotel in Jordan's capital Amman in 2005.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Scholars agreed that it is prohibited to have an actor or any man to play the role of any of the prophets and messengers, or Sahabah of Prophet Mohammad pease be upon them.
as well as women playing the role of the prophets wives.

I did read it, I'm just saying if they did have actors doing it, then it wont be a good thing.. Because it is a fact that the media always tends to spice things up with lies and fabrications...

But, If my doubts were wrong, then i'd say..keep it up.

Salaam,

This is great. We need the words of Allah swt to spread. Inshallah it will clear misconceptions & decrease Islamophobia. This is also a good way to counter McCain's anti-Islamic Obsession dvd.

:salam2: I think it is a great idea to make a film like this. Infact they should have made more by now. And people who think it is wrong take a chill pill and relax. We only fight about ohh this film is being made and so and so. Why dont we fight our nafs first. There is a zillion wrong things one does but no one wants to correct that but ohhh my god a muslim makes a movie on islam you have a million things to discourage him so that the non muslims never understand about islam. Not everybody reads books my friend. Some hate reading but show them a movie they will watch it. I would say go go go. best of luck to the producers. I wish they spend good amount of money on this movie

i agree with you brother...ALLAH´s wisdom works in mysterious ways..often we cant even see it untill it has happened.

i would love for such a movie to come out..based on true facts,...avoiding what is haram inshallah,,

but there is a flipside to this..SOMEONE just took away my dream from me haha i always wanted to make a movie about our beloved prophet mohammed salalahu wa3alayhi weselem based on facts and a movie about dajjal al masieh..im sure we have enough facts on both of them to make the entire movie industry and world aware of what islam has to offer..

the movie industry would fall for a movie about the life of mohammed pbuh for sure 300%.

I think this is a great idea and whenever it comes out I will definitely want to go see it, unfortunately as with many things there are going to be muslims who are going to be suspicious, but honestly I think if we stop being so suspicious all the time and applaud sincere efforts it would make things a lot easier and if there are mistakes we correct it and move on. *note* * I know no one whose posted before me is being suspicious, this is me just saying and being cynical*

I think this is a very good idea. As long as it is done correctly and accurate, then I say why not. The truth needs to be out there and maybe some one might take shahadah. Allah knows best.
