How can I quite watching T.V ''movies''..

Saifu deen

Alhamdullah..
:salam2:

I dont watch much T.V, but sometimes I watch movies which contains music. This made me ask myself various questions while I am watching the movie. What I am doing? Why I am doing something forbidden, although I know the contents of the movie will contain some prohibited things, alcohol, drugs, violents and so on.

On the other hand, my nafs is telling me to take things step by step and not to rush on anything, and how my iman isnt strong yet?. If I take quick steps, I am afraid to regret. At the same time, I am collecting sins by watching movies.

I am I lying to myself and should quite immediatly, or take things step by step and collect sins?... However, Allah (swt) knows that I am not comfortable watching movies, but at the same time its a habit which I had for long time but eventually will stop it. But when?????????

I hope that made sense..

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Salamu alaykum bro,

first you should pray 2 rekat and ask Allah s.v.a to help you in doing good. 2nd throw the tv from 10 stories to make sure it doesnt work :) just kidding dont do that, but do get rid of tv. Or you can have it if you use it as like a table :). Some people will defintitelly argue and say, but you can use tv for gooooooooooooood, like watch islamic videos and so on. Yes, you can, but the evil is more than benefit. Just like Allah s.v.a forbid alcohol, zina, gambling because the evil which they bring is worse. Get rid of it akhi it is worth it and use that time to study ur religion and memorize quran. barakallahu feek and ALlah knows best.

During Ramadaan I made it my goal to cut out tv in my life. Right now I am sitting looking at the television(it is not turned on) but I hardly turn it on. I try to occupy myself with reading or going out with the friends or taking a nice walk in a park and bring a good book.

I haven't had a computer for 3 weeks..but I didn't let the tv dominate..whooo!! 10 points for me :)...Like any addiction you need to take steps to get it out of your system. Like let's say you watch 5 hours of tv a day..cut it down to 3..then 2..then 1..and boom no more tv.

If you quit cold turkey, there is more of a chance that you may go back to the television. Most programs nowadays have mind-numbing unthought provoking shows. If you do watch television..try to watch History Channel or Discovery or Animal Planet..Good stuff

Jazaka Allah khair brother. Inshallah I will pray to Allah (swt) to help me on this one. But I was wondering, if I stop watching T.V, how I am suppose to convence my family to stop it, without them thinking that I am making everything haram..? I personally prefer my siblings to follow my actions and not my words. Therefore, I must wait for them to increase their iman first, so that they willingly stop watching whats unlawful, or even avoid it.

Have you dealt with the similar issue?..

Well done sister :mashallah: . I mainly watch sport events, Iqra, sharjah T.V and Islam Channel. But sometimes, I get tempted to watch movies ''arabic'' (which still contains women without hijab and so on). I avoid watching blockbuster's movies. Recently, alhamdullah I spent more time on TTI than sitting infront of the TV.

Did you convence others to stop watching T.V as well? how did you manage that?

Thank you akhi. Actually I have influenced by best friend who is not Muslim to stop watching television. At first she thought the notion was absurd because tv used to be our thing. I gave her all my reasons and basically told her that by giving into television you are denying yourself many beautiful things i.e. reading, going outside and appreciating this beautiful earth (just have to see passed the ugly things). I think we have lost contact with nature.

Many people have said though you can either make something halaal or haraam like with the television or the internet. Indeed it is hard to resist a movie where women and men might do some things that are not Islamic.
I guess it is easier for a women because we can sit there and stare at the screen at uncovered women and not think some things that men might.

I tend to watch a lot of documentaries also on the net. Maybe you can start doing that. Indeed TTI helps out a lot if you want an escape from the world so tainted with images and music you do not want to give into.

I know what you mean with the music in the films. That is indeed difficult for me because I recently cut out music also right before Ramadaan.

I don't know maybe someone else can give you some more input.

ASA,

Hey whatever happened to 4 hrs? Your better work on your #s ;)
Just kidding, I agree. Change does not happen overnight or spontaneously, well at least not for me.

In my humble opinion, I see a few good things on TV such as the above and the news. That's probably the only time I watch it. TV has information just like the internet. There are bad things on the internet and there are good things on the internet. You select what is appropriate based on assessing yourself (and in accordance with the Quran & Sunnah) and if things adversely affect your soul then you shouldn't do it.

Lol indeed numbers are not my friends. I am surprised I get the correct rakat down :D Anywho and in my humble opinion I agree with what you said about the good and bad on the net.

I just don't think watching a program that may not be deemed halaal is the biggest sin in the world :)

I agree with the HumbleWun, the tv and the internet, in both you have a choice in what you view. Everything is a process and takes time inshallah. I watch the news and an occasional program or movie, but I limit myself and my kids. I let my kids watch educational channels and I monitor what they watch. My son loves his Adams world videos, I dont mind because its Islamic, its the choices you make. Take it step by step, but throwing it out the window would not be a good idea, lol!! TV is not the problem, its us. Allah knows best.:wasalam:

there is a great audio lecture by imam siraj wahaj titled " turn off the tv " it explains why tv should be reduced or avoided altogether. in short there is more harm in it than there is benefit. imam wahaj threw a stat in there where he says the average american spends about 30 or more hours a week watching tv. he challenged the muslim audience that for every hour they spend on tv, they have to spend an hour studying quran and sunnah. great idea!!! tv has become so bad that the only thing i may watch is the news.

Wow, thats a great challenge. Subhanallah, may be my nafs is stronger than me, as I am not knowledgable yet in Islam. But inshallah, its a matter of time. I agree with the brothers & sisters, that TV isnt the problem, but in fact the problem is within us. Throwing the TV, isnt a solution brother muharram23 :) . I agree that time spent infront of TV you can earn reward or sins, its a matter of choice.

Lets see how it goes...

Anyone want to enter this challenge with me... Lets make it a group challenge if anyone interesting.. :) (Some brothers do watch movies like me, wanna join???? )
