How do deal with non-believers when...

...they throw Quran verses up at you out of context?

Asalaamu alalikum...

Recently I posted a comment on another (non Islamic) board on a thread discussing how an American school had to stop using t-shirts created for their band. The reason behind the argument was the fact that the t-shirts showed evolution of man and this offended some Christians.

I put a comment down that in Islam its a non-issue because we do believe in evolution and quoted from an English translation of the Quran a couple verses that uphold this (one of them was the verse that said Allah made man "in stages"). Anyway someone wrote back - in total disregard of the subject matter - about how the Quran talks about beating your wife is OK and they quoted that one verse using about 3 different English translations, ending with "How can you take anything seriously that condones and encourages spousal abuse?".

Of course I've not been Muslim long enough to be able to "fight back" or even defend myself so I had no clue how to respond, other than to decide not to return to this website.

We don't believe in evolution from apes to humanbeings. The stages mentioned in Quran are stages of the fetus in the womb of the mother. Or the stages from a baby to an old man.

Allah created the humanbeing in the best state: Adam and Eva. They were not apes. From Adam and Eva came the offspring.

If you read the quran you will understand what i mean.

And of course the islam don't encourage spousal abuse.

Take care

Thank you but I DO read the Qu'ran. But unfortunately I can't read or speak Arabic so I have to read a translation. I was referring to such Ayats as:

"The status of human life has been achieved after successfully passing through the steps of animal life".
[chapter 23 - verse 12]

And

"How can you attain this state of life? For this you should ponder over the Divine Law of Creation, according to which you have passed through various evolutionary stages to attain human form".
[chapter 71 - verse 14]

To me that doesn't sound like embrionic growth. I am not implying that Adam and Eve are apes.

Assalamoelaikoem warahmatullahi wbarakatuh,

My dear brother Danyal,

I have read many times the quran in Arabic. I have read also Tafsir. Sometimes i use the dutch and english translation.

For the english translation i recommend you

Translation of the meanings of THE NOBLE QUR'AN by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali And Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan

Ok, lets go to the verses you have mentioned. I will start with chapter 23 ( Surah Al-Mu'minun) verse 12

Danyal:
"The status of human life has been achieved after successfully passing through the steps of animal life".
[chapter 23 - verse 12]

Imad:Translation by Taqi-ud-Din Al Hilali and Muhammad Khan

verse 12 " And indeed we created man ( Adam) out of an extract of clay ( water and earth)"

verse 13: Thereafter We made him ( offspring of Adam) as a Nutfa ( mixed drops of the male and female sexuale discharge and lodged it) in a safe lodging ( womb of the woman)"

verse 14: Then we made the Nutfa into a clot , then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that litlle lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and the We brought it forth as another creation. So blessed is Allah, the Best of creators

This verses are talking about what i have mentioned: Adam and his offspring and the stages of an embryo/fetus. What you have mentioned is not the translation but a wrong explantion.

Let's go now to the other verse Ok Chapter 71 ( Surah Nuh) verse 14

Danyal:
"How can you attain this state of life? For this you should ponder over the Divine Law of Creation, according to which you have passed through various evolutionary stages to attain human form".
[chapter 71 - verse 14]

Imad:Translation by Taqi-ud-Din Al Hilali and Muhammad Khan
verse 14: While He has created you in (differend) stages (i.e first Nutfa, then Alaqa and then Mudghah

Here it is talking about the stages of an embryo/fetus in the womb of a mother.

Do you see the differences. The translation of Taqi-ud-Din and Mohammad Khan is a real translation. But what you have mentioned is not a translation but merely a wrong explanation.

And believe me i know the Quran, i studied the Quran. There is no evolution ( from apes to humanbeings) mentioned in the quran. Allah has mentioned the opposite. nd besides that i have also studied Science. Now i am studying medicine. I know the evolution theory

Take care

Wassalamoelaikoem warahmatullahi wbarakatuh,

Imad

such people are simply ignorant and in some cases prejudice. there is currently a lot of negativity and propaganda to create an evil image against Islam. this verse about wife beating is not carefully read nor is the quran read as a whole in proper context. ask yourself this, if the quran encouraged wife beating, why does it at the same time allow divorce? if the quran 'encouraged' wife beating, why is there only one verse saying so while the rest of quran speaks of kindness, love, respect and mercy between husband and wife? The quran must be read in context and with a clear mind. First of all, islam does not encourage wife beating nor does it allow abuse. if we are not allowed to abuse animals, how can we then abuse women? the only verse which speaks of wife beating is speaking about extreme situations which might take place in a marriage an there are few answers given before it mentions hitting the wife as a last result. the prophet(PBUH) never beat his wives and demonstrated the hitting by a tap on arm.

As salaam aleykom, as for evolution, it is accepted in some cases since some thing s were created over time and evolved but that does not mean humans evolved from monkeys. the evolution as promoted in schools and by atheist is a deception and not correct. If humans evolved from monkeys, how come we still have monkeys? so evolution is not correct in all cases, but it is true in some instances.

Don't think the lecture is all Arabic, he quoting saying the long hadith in Arabic then he gives the lecture in English. I think he answers your question, mostly.

BROTHER, TRY THIS WEBSITE: http://www.islamicstudies.info/tafheem.php

This website contains Arabic as well as good translation and then something unique. It has explanation of the verses of Quran. This will help you a lot in understanding Quran.
There is also an "Intro" button which gives background of each chapter.

As far as treatment of wife is concerned I will try to find some great stuff for them.

It is a good idea to first attain sufficient knowledge before challenging someone. But I admire your sprit. Brother if you study regularly then in not too distant future you will be able to make these guys fall flat on their faces. All you have to do is show contradictions in Torah/Bible and show the beauty of Quran.
