4 “Don’ts” to Defending Islaam
In the Name of Allaah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

With islaamophobia on the rise, hateful and derogatory comments about Islaam have become the norm, from hurling insults at the religion to making mockery of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon Him) and the followers of the religion. It is all too easy to become outraged by the hateful words and actions and to reciprocate in kind in a bid to defend the religion. However, as muslims, there are clear verses that address the issue of dealing with the disbelieving or ignorant people.

  • Do Not Stay With Them
Allaah, subhaanaHu wa ta’aala says (interpretation of the meaning);

And when you (Muhammad, Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) see those who engage in a false conversation about our verses (of the Qur’aan) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if shaytan (satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers).

Those who fear Allaah, keep their duty to Him and avoid evil are not responsible for them (the disbelievers) in any case, but (their duty) is to remind them, that they may fear Allaah (and refrain from mocking at the Qur’aan)”. Qur’aan 6, Ayah 68 – 69.

Muslims are commanded to ignore and avoid them, so that they become aware of the error they are indulging in, that they may avoid this behavior and never repeat it again.~Tafseer ibn katheer.

  • Do Not Insult Their False Deities
It is for the greater good that muslims are commanded to not insult the false gods of the disbelievers as Allaah, subhaanaHu wata’aala says (interpretation of the meaning);

And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allaah, lest they insult Allaah wrongfully without knowledge…Qur’aan 6, Ayah 108.

  • Do Not Be A Manner-less Caller
Muslims have been commanded to call to islaam with wisdom, fairness and manners as Allaah, subhaanaHu wa ta’aala says (interpretation of the meaning);

Invite (mankind, O Muhammad, Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) to the way of your Lord (i.e islaam) with wisdom (i.e with the Divine Revelation and the Qur’aan) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better…Qur’aan 16, Ayah 125.
  • Do Not Stoop as Low
It’s very easy to give back as good as you get, or even more. However, as muslims, there’s virtue in being the bigger person as Allaah, SubhaanaHu wa Ta’aala says (interpretation of the meaning);

And the faithful slaves are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness“. Qur’aan 25, Ayah 63.
Defend the deen by correcting the ills being spoken about it, there is a lot of hate and anger around the world and it is left to us as muslims to quench it with soft words.

May Allaah, SubhaanaHu wa ta’aala make us of those who enjoin good and forbid evil.

Ameen.
