i have never heard of such story, but yes, this years arafat was friday.
:ma: i was there too, but did not hear any body talk about El Mahdi etc. i mean at least the Ulumas should have mentioned at least if there is any Ahadith with regards to this.

we await from highly knowledgable brothers and sisters for more clarifications.

Is your friend a shia? Some shias believe in this, but with no reference I am aware of. Allah knows best.
