Assalamu alaykum,

I'm sending a monetary gift to a friend in Pakistan, so she can go shopping, or have a nice meal, or whatever she chooses, lol. :SMILY252:

I was going to send a gift like a book, but it is WAY too much for shipping.
So i plan to send cash, $40 in a friendship card :hearts:

Question: When i convert American $$$ to Pakistani Rupees, I get: 3,414.40 PKR
Is that a lot? With $40 you can go a long way in America, I'm wondering 3,414.40 is a lot in Pakistani currency too...

Assalamu alaykum,

when i was in Pakistan , 3500 was too much for single day spending but it also depends upon the person what kind of shopping one intends to do, if one wants , one even cant buy a suit in 3500 but in other way around one can spend whole month in 3500 , it depends upon the person..

yes for one single meal or light type of shopping, this money is enough mashAllah..

:)

Jazakallah khair ya'll :)

I learned not to judge an amount of money on the number...for example, 15000KR (Danish crowns) seems like a lot to me because its a large number - but in fact, it's not a lot at all :O

World currency is weird

Dear sister,
what do you mean by sending it in a friendship card? If you want to send cash in a card, then the chances are almost 0%, that she would get it. If you want to send money, you must send it by bank or western union etc.

Why would she not get it? We send money in cards all the time in America. I have even received money in a card from the United Kingdom.

I know the pakistani government probably opens my packages, but an envelope with a card? I doubt it.

They don't open each letter for political reasons but they scan letters from foreign countries for currency notes. Since it is forbidden to send currency notes in letters, they think it is their right to keep the money and they deliver the card or letter to the destination. A friend of mine has tried to send some money this way but was not successful. I am sorry to disappoint you but this is the situation in Pakistan.

That is so sad...You people experience loadshedding several hours a day, people are starving on the streets..Where is all the money going? Certainly not to improve the daily life in pakistan :(

use western union, its fast and safe.

shopping:
3500 would buy 1 pair of quality men's shoes OR 2 decent trousers OR 1 decent trouser and 2 decent shirts.
i dont do shopping with/for ladies so cant say about their stuff.

price of petrol is around approx RS 80/lit

Meal
3500 is enough for an evening for 2 at PC or Marriott.
Increase the number of people as you come down the ladder.

estimated price of ordinary meals
daal chawal: Rs 30 - 50
biryani: Rs 70 - 150
tikka/bbq: Rs 120 - 250
steak : Rs 500 - 1000
pizza hut/KFC: Rs 800 - 1200 (yes junk food is more expensive and fashionable then normal meals here).
etc

drinks
lassi: Rs 30 - 50
shakes/juices: Rs 50 - 250
coke (500ml): Rs 30 - 50 (in posh areas)
ice cream (1 scoup): Rs 50 - 250 (local to imported)
etc.

In other cities rates are lower. i can provide an estimate for the particular meal you want but for Karachi only.

Sending currency notes through international post is prohibited as far as I know. As someone, rightly suggested you can wire transfer by western union. You might want to send it as traveller's cheques if you insist to send it by mail.

But wire transfer is the most convenient, safe and quickest method as far as I know..
