[Seeking Allah's Mercy]

Asalamo`Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Baraakaatuh,

Sorry for the "off-Ramadan" thread, but I just did something "Off-Ramadan" and I have to get it out of my system.

I was searching TTI for men's dress code thread and was thinking of bumping it. While searching my eyes got a word "metrosexual", curious as usual I checked it up. It was something stupid discussing fashion conscious males. A brother in there praised some British brother. I googled searched him thinking he was some sort of an Islamic speaker or a Da'ee etc. Unfortunately he turned out to be a former Guantanamo detainee. My curiosity got the better of me and reading one story after the other I got all worked up.

I just read about a kid who was/is still detained. And this is what is eating me up. What in the world is wrong with parents that they leave there kids be in places such as battlefields? I saw his pictures where he was claimed to be handling bombs and weapons. Then him in dust and rubble and lastly in blood. He's now in [probably] the worse place on the face of planet earth accused of having killed a soldier.

This seriously disturbs me. How could people do that? This guys could have been educated both in secular and Islamic education, he could have done wonderful in his life.

Why can't we be more productive and beneficial to ourselves, our Ummah and the outlook of our Deen. Look at a group in U.S. called Al-ma`roof [or something similar]. I heard NAK mention them in one of his lectures. They go around in their neighborhood, helping old people, helping wrecked kids get a life and trying to bring happiness in people's lifes. This is many billions times better than kids fighting in wars and then ending up in a place like Guantanamo, where ants have more rights than people.

This is sickening, especially that I've wasted so much time on it. I could have heard another two lectures by NAK!

You are right ukht. You know everytime I hear NAK talk about our family system and parents duties in bringing up their children and all, I just can't think but feel he's spot on.

I'm actually really sensitive to this sort of stuff. Violence shakes my very soul and I lose sleep over it. I try to stay well away from it. I first heard of this guy when a sister posted a petition for him. I signed and didn't knew what's his story. I sooo hate myself for not stopping myself and clicking his name on wiki to know what's his story. If only I could bottle my curiosity. Astagfirullah.

I'm planning on reading the prophet biography to distract myself. Hope that's not a bad idea.

Yes, the reality, when it contrasts with one's understanding, creates ripples, in some. It happens often, thats natural, genuine and good. Very fact that Violence, misery, injustice makes one lose sleep, shows the person is living and not indifferent. What We can do in such cases accept it, build on our awareness and do what we can in our sphere of influence... Awareness has different levels. The ways of the world, opens our eye everyday. The more we know, the more we realize there is always something lacking (in reports,news and hence our understanding). Since its a case of Afghanistan, Iraq and US, there must be something more behind the scenes... It might not be parents faults, in this case.

Lets accept the System is daft ,its all politically motivated, they are adding to their mistakes and not admitting it... Unfair treatment. Children should not have been sent there directly. The children were robbed of their innocence. US admits only three inmates were ever treated as children. Period.

Camp Iguana is a small compound in the detainment camp complex on the US Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Camp Iguana originally held three child detainees who camp spokesmen then claimed were the only detainees under age 16. It was closed in the winter of 2004 when the three were sent home. When the Department of Defense was forced, by US District Court Judge Jed Rakoff's court order to release the identities of all the detainees, they acknowledged that they had held up to twenty minors in the adult portion of the prison.
In 2005 Camp Iguana was re-opened to hold some of the 38 detainees classified as "no longer enemy combatants", while they await diplomatic efforts to find them a permanent home in a country other than their country of origin or the United States.

There is another case of a kidnapped child , sent to this same Symbol of Injustice, and Child ended up with health problems and in addition, the child can now never return to its parents!

Face it? How in the world can one face that? That's insane! A kid is left with militants, he trains as one, he's attacked, he kills, he's shot and now he's rotting in a place known for no humanity for more than 10 years, no one helps him and from a young teenager he grows up into a man prison. You say face it? Akhi, face it with what? Mental depression. Akh this is bizarre.

I'm full aware of all these facts. I live in a country very close to war zones. There is no running away from such stories when they are on everyone's tongue but being an idiot and personally searching such cases, viewing pictures and coming to know of details. . .Tell me, what's the benefit of that akh? I've heard of 12 year old afghan having killed one American soldier and injured another. It was said he was given protection by the Taliban and that Americans demanded he be handed over. That's a story, now add pictures and facts. Then that's a depression dose. Children MUST NOT enter wars at such a tender age. They are to be protected, not to protect. And who speaks/stand up for them when their rights are violated? What's the point reading into such stories. Had it been an American kid killing an Afghan with a hand grenade everything would be so different. How could you expect me to face it when Children of the Ummah are treated like lice!

It might not be parents faults, in this case.

Sorry but how did he ended up in that place with militants, his father in one country and mother and family in another? There are videos[I didn't watch Alhumdulillah!] and pictures which support the story that his father let him go when he asked, despite his mother protest. This surely is the parents fault too.

It's called "Ar-Raheeq Al Maqhtum" by Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri [If I'm not mistaken]. I've read it a couple of times. It's a really beautiful book.

First of all, whenever I see someone is a Gitmo detainee, I always question why. Because honestly, I have read books of people who go inside Gitmo and interview these people and go as far as visiting their families in strange cities, strange lands they don't know all to see WHO that person is. And a lot of the people are victims of greed. Because after 9/11 what they dont tell you is, American governments dropped flyers all over, in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc and offered money to whoever turned in an Al-Qaeda operative.........WELL CAN YOU IMAGINE THOSE RESULTS? Everyone and their 90 year old grandfather are now part of Al-Qaeda. Astaghfirallah, astaghfirallah!

But there is good news too. There are people in gitmo being cleared of all charges and being returned home every year. They may have been there 10 years, but alhamdulilah, they all won't die there.

For the NON GUILTY ONES: May Allah swt reward them and give them a better life in the hereafter, than what Humanity has given them for this life.

I'd like to recommend a book, it is my top 5 favorite books alhamdulilah. This woman is so selfless and I believe she has had an active role in detainees who are a victim of greed being freed subhan allah.

Finally, I'd like to add how heartbreaking it is how some young Muslims are taught to do things like murder and crime in the name of Allah swt. I feel these kids are targeted, maybe for their lack of self-esteem, maybe they are uneducated, maybe they have a personality where they idolize the wrong people (as like father figure or mentor) and the mentor leads them astray. It's just a heartbreaking situation.

What I find troubling is, whatever their actions and who help them do it, they are still children. Innocent. They don't think and understand like an adult does. What I would say to you though is control your environment and don't set yourself up to spiral out of control like this. What is the point? No doubt, our hearts have to be in the right place, we have to feel pain where the Ummah is feeling pain, you can't fix the broken lives you've been reading about, you can't influence covert operations or change evil intentions, foreign policies and what not, but we have to be exerting some effort and for most of us this is in the form of making sincere du'aa for those who are oppressed. Do that, don't be-little it.

Find a way to dispell negativity, give yourself a 1500 word limit and write about whatever injustice you feel shouldn't be there, if it helps? I think that's quite therpeutic, helps to get it out of your system. Maybe someday you could be in a position where you can change these things but you're not right now.

Ask yourself why are you being selective about specific types of sufferring and oppression? The Ummah has so much wrong with it and so much that needs fixing from the very bottom level - in your community you'll find a lot of things that shouldn't be there, is there anything closer to home you can change and influence? Without even needing to research into your city I can take a pretty good guess that in your very city there will be orphans going hungry, abuse of various kinds, teenagers committing ridda ..long list.

Can you influence any of this? Maybe you actually can? If you can't, then again, allow your heart to acknowledge it and make du'aa without be-littling the power of du'aa. The next level is to look even closer to our own selves, there are probably things in our own houses we can help improve, towards our own family members, build strong ties for the sake of Allah etc, charity begins at home, after all.

My overriding point is to choose your battles wisely, gravitate toward your sphere of influence, don't work yourself up into a fit of despair, this only makes you a burden on the Ummah, why? Because if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem, of many.

As soon as we control our environments, our emotions, fix our persepectives with a healthy dose or realism (..and maybe a sprinkle of idealism!), we might well achieve something great, bi-idhnillah.
