Until 1999, the Guinness Book of Records repeated the popular misconception that Toronto’s Yonge Street was 1,896 km (1,178 mi) long, and thus the longest street in the world; this was due to a mistaken conflation of Yonge Street with the rest of Ontario’s Highway 11. Yonge Street is in actuality 56 kilometers long.

A cockroach’s brain spread throughout its body. If you chop off its head, it can still live for up to a week. It finally dies because it can’t eat.

In space, no one can hear you cry. Because you can’t. Astronauts are unable to cry properly because there is no gravity and tears cannot flow properly as they would on Earth. It is possible to produce tears in space – but they would leave the eye and float around.

The small town of Codell in Kansas was hit by a deadly tornado on May 20th, 1918. Not especially remarkable – except it had also been hit by tornados at around the same time in the evening, on the same day, in 1917 and 1916 as well.

Anton-Babinski syndrome is a rare condition in which a blind person doesn’t realise they are blind. They usually insist they can see perfectly well, and make up excuses for why they make errors – such as blaming the quality of light in the room, or saying they’re a bit tired.

The Soviet Union was the first country to have a spacecraft on the moon – not the Unites States. In 1959, Luna 2 was the first craft to crash-land on the moon. In February, 1966, Luna 9 was the first soft-landed craft on the moon which relayed back pictures. Four months later, the United States landed its first craft on the moon (Surveyor I).
