MIT students must pass a swim test to graduate. The director of Physical Education said swimming is “…a self-survival skill. Research shows that most drownings occur in families where parents don’t know how to swim.”

The test requires you to swim 100 yards. It used to be 200 yards, the width of the Charles River, but then someone realized if you fell in the river, you’d only have to swim at most half the width.

The Red Hand is the symbol of Ulster (Northern Ireland, UK) because according to myth a boat race was held to determine the king – first to touch the shore wins the crown. One potential king saw he was losing, so cut off his hand (covering it red with blood) and threw it on the shore, thus winning the race.

Balloonfest’86 was a publicity stunt in which the United Way of Cleveland released 1.4 million balloons over the city. The balloons tied up highway and air traffic, caused lawsuits seeking millions in damages, and interfered with a Coast Guard search for two boaters who were later found drowned.

On January 3, 2005 FOX made a reality show named “Who’s Your Daddy?”.

It starts with an orphan that is introduced to eight men and tries to figure out which one really is her father.

If she’s right, she wins the cash prize.

If she’s wrong, the “dad” who’s conned her takes the money.

Immediately after the Challenger explosion, shares of every corporation involved in the Space Shuttle dropped. But by the end of the day, most had rebounded; only Morton Thiokol remained low.

This was months before the official investigation found Thiokol to be responsible for the disaster.
