Quick answer for now, they believed in God/Allah BUT they said through an IDOL is the only way. Thus this is ascribing partners to Allah.

Slave of Allah (swt)
aslam o alikum
brother Allah is the word used for God before islam, in Bible the hebrew the word for Allah is Eloah, and in aramanic its Elah, spelled differently but same way to say it so Allah is the word taught by all Prophets (PBUT)
hope this helps

very good question brother. i asked the very same question myself when i was in school.

Allah is arabic for God (Unique). in pre-islamic days the Arabs always addressed Him as Allah because that is the word used in their mother tongue. but they ascribed partners to Him e.g. allaat, uzza, manna, taghut, hubbal etc.

Muhammad's (PBUH) father was not a pagan. He was a Hanifa (believer in Monotheism) just like Abraham, the patriarch prophet (PBUH). they were very few of these people but they still believed that Allah is One.

a good parable before you is that you can look at nowadays. a lot of muslims know that Allah is the One True God and they should pray 5 times but they don't. there are still very few muslims who pray 5 times.

this was the same condition during pre islamic days. They knew God is One but they ascribed partners to Him. very few didn't do that.
