Inshallah this Thread will clear All that is to know about MAGIC in great Detail.

Magicians practicing sorcery have certain features and signs that prove that they are obeying and worshipping the devils (shayaateen) and are in league with them. The ruling of magic (witchcraft, sorcery) is that it is disbelief (kufr) and anyone indulging in it is a kafir (disbeliever). There is no such thing as “good” magic. All magic (sihr) is haraam.

Signs of the Practitioners of Magic (Sihr)

From these signs are:

The magician will ask you for some clothing which has been in direct contact with your body, they are looking for something which has traces of sweat upon it. It can also be a comb, or some hair, or a picture (photo).

The magician will ask you for your name and the name of your mother. This type of magician is greater in his disbelief than others, because the devils are prepared to work for him through names alone, without the need for any clothing or hair and the likes, which indicates his obedience to the devils is greater than others, and that he has reached a level with these devils that other lesser magicians have not.

He will chant or mumble what are talismans (spells, amulets) but in a language that is not understandable.

He will ask a person to keep away from the people for a defined time in a room in which no sunlight enters.

He will often be found in a dark room.

He will often use bukhoor (incense) or a fire in which he will put bukhoor (incense).

The magician will ask you for a sacrificial animal (chicken, sheep etc.) with a given description (i.e. age, size etc.) so that it is sacrificed in a specific way (without Allaah’s name being mentioned), and then its blood is used to smear on to the patient’s body (where he has his pain or disease), or the patient may be requested to go to a deserted buildings or places and asked to smear the blood, or it may be on stones or on trees in a certain location.

On some occasions the magician may tell the person his name, his mother’s name, the place he has come from, or the reason (problem, ailment, need) for which he has come. He gets this knowledge through the devils he is giving obedience to, and which he is summoning for this purpose.

He may give the person an amulet in the shape of a triangle or a square (made out of paper, or a cloth), or it could be out of leather, or it could be made out of silver, and inside of it there are written calls for help from the devils, coded through numbers and symbols, and words written backwards. He may ask the person to hang them around his neck or put them under the pillow.

He will write talismans, or amulets in which he mixes parts of the Qur’an, the names of the Prophets, or Companions, along with unknown names, symbols and combinations of numbers and letters.

He will write or prepare talismans on paper or otherwise and which will often contain five pointed stars – these five pointed stars represent Satan in occult symbolism.

He may give the person certain artifacts and ask him to bury them in the earth, in a specific location.

He may give the person pieces of paper mixed with pieces of wood and ask him to burn these papers and wood and use them as bukhoor (incense, fumigation) to fumigate himself with the smoke. And these papers are likely to be pages of the Qur’an torn into small pieces.

He may give him the skin of an animal (like a fox or wolf or jackal), or its teeth and ask him to carry them, or he may give him black threads, or cords to hang in his car.

He may ask the person to wear a garment he gives him and ask him to wear it on a specific defined days, and the garment will be filled with talismans and amulets (they will be stitched into the garment).

He may give the person a ring to wear onto which talismans are etched, or a small padlock with its key inserted around which a talisman is attached with sellotape. And other odd things like this.

From the signs of the magician is belittlement of the Qur’an and its desecration, and this takes place in many ways.

These signs are found amongst many people claiming to be “faith-healers”, and they come out in the garb of faith, pretending to be pious, and they place advertisements in the papers and on the radio and television (in some Muslim lands) and in the Western lands also. So you should beware of these liars and worshipers of the devils, and warn everyone against them –

Lets see how these people became magicians in the first place

Allaah the Most High said, regarding those who learn and practice magic:

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُواْ لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلاَقٍ
And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. (al-Baqarah 2:102)

And the "buying, purchasing" mentioned in the verse, Shaykh Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh says in explanation of the verse, as occurs in his explanation of Kitab ut-Tawhid on the chapter on magic:

And the magician he has purchased the learning of magic, he has purchased, purchased what thing? He has purchased magic in place of what thing? In place of Tawhid, so the price is Tawhid, the price is faith in Allaah alone, and the object (being bought) is magic... so it means the one who gave his religion as consideration (something of value) for that thing which he took, which is magic...

Since magic relies upon the agency of the Jinn (see here), then a man or woman does not become a magician up until the Jinn can verify that this person is eager to become one truthfully and practically, and that he desires to harm the people, and thus when an individual first starts making contact with the Jinn, they will require from him or her the following,

as examples:

To disbelieve in Allaah, through reviling Him, or transgressing against Him (such as in the manner described below)

To abandon the prayer.

To pray in the toilet area.

To put the mus.haf (copy of the Qur'an) under his feet and to enter the toilet with it area, as a means of defiling and belittling it.

To write the Qur'an with impurities such as menstrual blood or faeces as a means of belittling it.

To commit incest.

To remain alone in a dark room for forty days without coming into contact with water.

To remain for a long time in janaabah (state of sexual impurity) without bathing.

To remain in a dark room, or some deserted isolated place where the rebellious devils amongst the Jinn come and perform lewd acts with him or her.

The devils love disobedience in Allaah and kufr and shirk, and thus, they will only serve and carry out the requests of people who are prepared to do acts similar to those above. If you recall, Iblis refused to bow to Adam (alayhis salaam), and thereafter beguiled Adam to disobey his Lord. Thus, enmity was set up between Iblis and his offspring and Adam and his offspring, and Iblis knows that his destination is the fire and that he has simply been given respite for a period. And thus he is using that period of respite in order to misguide and lead as much of Adam's offspring into the fire with him. The Jinn in general are characterized with envy, hatred, jealousy and mischief in general, and they detest revelation and prophethood, which is why they request the aforementioned acts of desecration from those seeking their aid in witchcraft. And the relationship between these two categories of people is mentioned in the verse:

And on the Day when He will gather them (all) together (and say): "O you assembly of jinns! Many did you mislead of men," and their allies amongst men will say: "Our Lord! We benefited one from the other, but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us." He will say: "The Fire be your dwelling place, you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah may will. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing." (Al-An'am 6:128)
Ibn Taymiyyah comments on this verse (an-Nubuwwaat, pp, 311-312, through Fath ul-Mannaan, a compilation of the writings of Ibn Taymiyyah on the Jinn):

As for magic and soothsaying, then it is from the assistance of the devils to the sons of Adam, for the Jinn inform the soothsayer (with information) and likewise the magician, he kills or brings about illness or levitates in the sky through the devil's assistance of him. And so their affairs depart from what human's consider the norm by way of the devil's assistance of them ...
Then he quotes the above verse, then he continues:

For the Jinn and humans, they sought benefit (utility, pleasure), some of them from others, so these ones used those ones, and those ones used these ones in many affairs. All of them did for another whatever his objective was so as to aid in his objective, and magic and soothsaying (fortune-telling) is from this angle.
And thus, the Jinn seek their benefit through the magicians which is the desecration of the sanctity of revelation, prophethood and the religion, and the magicians seek the utility of the Jinn in bringing about or repelling harm, or seeking fame, fortune and the likes.

Note that this also happens amongst the Jews and Christians. Those who are practitioners of magic amongst them will be asked by the Jinn to commit what would be, in their religion, disbelief, such as dishonoring the Bible, or the Torah, or cursing and reviling Jesus, the son of Mary and so on. And in general the devils hate the revealed books, and they hate Prophethood and Messengership, and as the Jinns are of many different religions and beliefs (Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Pagans and so on), including hypocrites amongst them and innovators, and as the general characteristic of the devils is to love disbelief and disobedience and violation of the sanctities, then they will command the magicians, that come from the background of the revealed books, to commit that which is a revilement upon the notions of revelation and prophethood.

Treating Magic with Magic is Haraam (Unlawful) and the Reality of Those Who Claim to Use 'Good Magic' To Defeat 'Bad Magic'

A lot of self-proclaimed "faith-healers" and "spiritualists" and "pirs" and other charlatans, swindlers, cheats and fraudsters who advertise in abundance in the newspapers amongst ethnic minorities in particular, they claim that they use "good magic" to combat "bad magic". To understand what is really going on, and what these people are doing, we have to understand that after selling his soul and his faith for a miserable price (see here), this is how a witch (that's what these people essentially are) performs his craft:

There are two things involved in an instance of magic:

The First: Al-Qaa'idah (The Base): This refers to that preparation (of magic) which may be a drink, or food which reaches the body through the stomach, or it may be what has been sprinkled on the doorstep, or the (talisman) buried in the ground, or put in flowing water, or planted somewhere. This is what is called "the base" and it is what essentially invokes the "khaadim" (agent, servant). You have to remember that the person performing this sorcery and witchcraft has already sold his faith, since he will only get agents from the Jinn performing and executing for him if they get something in return, which is disbelief (kufr) in belief, deed or word.

The Second: The Khaadim (Agent, Servant): This is from the devils amongst the Jinn. And this agent executes whatever is found in "the base", and this agent understands its symbolism and coding. The devils amongst the Jinn venerate the talisman (spell) and the devilish names it contains, either written explicitly or in coded form (which are likely names of the senior of the Jinn, and their kings and the likes). After preparing his "base", the magician will say something like "O servants (agents), you are entrusted through these talismans or spells to separate between so and so and his wife" (or whatever the magic might be for). Now, the agent from the Jinn, out of his veneration for what is in the talisman (of the lofty names), will then begin his work on the one on whom the magic is intended, and it is likely that this performing agent may simply be commanded by more senior Jinn.

So one sorcerer will perform an instance of magic on, let's say a man to separate him from his wife. Now this man may go along to someone he believes is "religious" and is going to help him. So he goes to him, and this man promises to help him, and this man (the "healer") in reality practices magic, even if he makes an appearance of religiosity. What this sorcerer (in reality) will do is to include some apparent religious aspects such as ask the man to read parts of the Qur'an or other incantations which in and of themselves are fine. However, to get rid of the magic and to make his money quickly, he will perform another instance of magic on the same man. But he's got to make sure that the "agency" from the Jinn he is going to invoke and use is of a higher authority than that used in the first instance of magic. It's essentially like a turf-war. So initially the first instance of magic may disappear but then the effects of the second instance of magic (which maybe something totally different) will begin to manifest. What happens is the second "agent" (from the Jinn) comes along and kicks out the first "agent" (from the Jinn), so the first magic goes and appears to be "healed", but then the second instance of magic will commence shortly thereafter. And this person simply becomes a playground for the magicians and this is how people get used and abused.

So you understand what is going on here. These magicians simply play games and they simply try to outdo the magic of other sorcerers. And amongst the Jinn you have hierarchies and they have kings and leaders amongst them and you have the common-folk amongst them. And likewise amongst the sorcerers and magicians you have different levels amongst them. These ranks (amongst the magicians) are based upon which devils they are obeying and worshiping, the more senior and greater those devils, the more efficient the magicians will be and greater will be the disbelief and repugnant acts that such magicians will have performed to win the "agency" of those Jinn. This is how it is all working. The magicians take up this practice either because they are simply seeking material gain, or because philosophically and ideologically they believe in esoteric (mystical, secret) doctrines, considering them the truth, and they are not necessarily after material gain. Whatever the case, these people are people of mischief and you should flee from them and warn your communities and societies against them because they are the ones who create these problems of magic amongst families and societies and then come and present themselves as "healers".

As for whether the magic takes effect or not, then all of that is subservient and dependent upon Allaah's will and decree, and magic (the combination of "the base" and the implementation by "the agent") is simply a means (sabab) through which the effect may be attained if Allaah allows it to take place. However, there are many factors (which arise and are determined through Allaah's permission, will and decree) that will prevent it from taking place such as the strong faith and practice of the individual, the protection through recitation of the Qur'an and the remembrances, the use of ajwaa dates, drinking zam zam water maintenance of wudhoo and so on, or just the pure will and decree of Allaah alone, without the need for the coming together of one or more asbaab (means) - and indeed sufficient is Allaah for the one who relies upon Him alone.

Treating Magic with Magic is Unlawful (Haraam) and Is from the Handiwork of the Devil

The Scholars of Islaam have declared it unlawful for magic to be treated with magic, and it is related from al-Hasan al-Basree (rahimahullaah) that he said, (لا يحل السحر إلا ساحر), "Magic is not repealed except by a magician" and what he means is that whoever repealed magic through magic (through the use of anything considered "a base" as explained above), then this person is no doubt a magician and a disbeliever in Allaah - so long as whatever he is doing is not from the Book or the Sunnah.

And there occurs the chapter in "Kitaab ut-Tawhid" (the Book of Monotheism) in relation to what is called "an-Nushrah" which simply means the treatment of magic with magic, this is how it was understood with the Arabs in Jaahiliyyah, and so the following hadeeth is found in the chapter on "an-Nushrah":

عن جابر: أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم- سئل عن النشرة، فقال: هي من عمل الشيطان رواه أحمد بسند جيد وأبو داود

From Jabir (radiallaahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah was asked about an-nushrah,so he said, "It is from the actions of the devil". Reported by Ahmad with a good chain and Abu Dawud.
And this is in reference to magic being treated with magic. But the word "nushrah" actually means that a man simply stand up having been cured and relieved (of his ailment), this is the actual meaning of "nushrah", and thus "nushrah" (healing) can be by way of what is legitimate, which is through the proper Sharee'ah means of treating magic, or it can be what is mentioned in this hadeeth, which is through the action of the devil, which is another instance of magic. And the Scholars use this hadeeth as textual evidence for the express prohibition of treating magic with magic.

So from this, we learn that there is no such thing as "good magic" combating "bad magic", that is a lie and a swindle, all magic, which inevitably requires the agency of the Jinn, involves kufr and shirk and obedience to the devils. To keep the perspective here go and read this article - and you will learn that Iblees and devils amongst the Jinn have enmity to Aadam and his offspring, and Iblees desires to be worshipped, the devils desire to be worshipped, since they envy Aadam and his offspring, for Iblees was ordered to prostrate to Aadam, but he was arrogant and refused. So the devils amongst the Jinn want worship, and the magicians are prepared to worship them and to sell their faith and to commit acts or statements of disbelief and other vile acts. And thus it is not possible for anyone to indulge in magic except that he must have won the assistance of the devils, since there is no magic except with the assistance of the devils.
