Williams Christianity Remarks Under Fire

IslamOnline.net & Newspapers

CAIRO — The Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Anglican Church, Rowan Williams, is on the firing line again from politicians and Christian leaders for comments that key elements of the Christian doctrine are offensive to Muslims.

"The archbishop has lost the plot," Tory MP Philip Davies told the UK Express on Thursday, July 17.

"Dr Williams should be proud of his Christian beliefs."

The criticism came after Williams said in a letter to Muslim leaders on promoting dialogue and understanding between the two faiths that some parts of the Christian religion is "difficult, sometimes offensive, to Muslims."

He explained that for example, the Christian concept of the Trinity – which states that God exists as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – conflicts with Islamic teaching that there is one all-powerful God.

"I believe that for the sake of open and careful dialogue it is important to try and clarify what we do and what we do not mean by it," he said.

But the Archbishop's comments drew fierce criticism from fellow church leaders.

"It's a strange thing to say in a way," Rev David Phillips, the general secretary of the conservative evangelical group The Church Society, said.

"It's not really the end game for Christians, or for Muslims."

The Archbishop's remarks came just few months after he was embroiled in a political and religious storm for suggesting that some parts of Shari`ah should be adopted in the British law.

His remarks have united all three main political parties against him and drew fierce criticism from church leaders.

Leading newspapers and tabloids have launched vitriolic campaigns against Williams, with some calling on him to resign.

Evangelize not Apologize

In his letter, Williams also spoke critically of Christianity's history of violence, harsh punishments and abandonment of peaceful principles.

"Christianity has been promoted at the point of the sword and legally supported by extreme sanctions," the Archbishop said, drawing flak from church leaders.

"People are sick to death of this handwringing about things from long ago," MP Davies said.

"He is supposed to be leading the Church, not apologizing for it.

"What kind of leadership is this?"

Mike Judge, spokesman for the think-tank Christian Institute, said that Williams should rather focus his criticism on the Muslim religion.

"Why apologize for things that happened hundreds of years ago? You can hardly compare what happened under the Inquisition with problems in the modern world."

Critics also said that Williams, the spiritual leader of the world's Anglicans, should be evangelizing rather than apologizing.

"It must be the role of the Archbishop of Canterbury to evangelize to other faiths," Phillips, of The Church Society, told the Telegraph.

"The danger is that someone in his role becomes over-cautious."
