Is v4:129 is an injuction to v4:3..

Hard Rock Moslem

I'm your brother
Assalamu'alaikum,

May Allah forgive all our sins and sins of all Muslims whether they are still alive or they are no longer with us.

This is about POLYGAMY.

I know this not a favourite topic to some sisters, pls forgive me. I will like to make it clear the reason I'm writing this to share what I learned from one ustaz yesterday during weekly talk organised by my nearby Mussollah (not promoting polygamy ok).

Is verse 4:129 is an injuction to polygamy in the verse 4:3 in the Qur'an? The ustaz said many Muslim were misunderstood verse 4:129 and some enemies of Islam also use this verse to reject polygamy in Islam.

The ustaz also commented the following, which make sense to me:

Benefits of polygamy at a glance:
- polygamy increases the chance of more offspring,
- benefit of more offspring: the practice in any democratic country, normally majority will rule
- polygamy will reduce adultery among Muslim men

Why the enemies discourage polygamy:
- they realise the benefits to Muslims as highlighted above
- so they want see the total opposite

Coming back to the topic, according to the ustaz verse 4:129 was misunderstood, wrongly interpreted by many including Muslims (I was one of them). Some was a result of being influenced by non-Muslim sources. The actual tafseer for verse 4:129 and the complete story can be found from the following link:

Note: I'm not sure how reliable this website is, but what has been said by the ustaz is the same as highlighted in the web. Readers is advise to do homework and highlight if there is any discrepancies found.

The conclusion based on this link which correspond with what my ustaz said:

Quran 4:3 and Quran 4:129 cannot be 'tied together' to show an injunction against polygamy because the definition of "justice" as used in both is demonstrably different and does not carry the same meaning. 4:3 only mandates that material equality and equitable Mahr are required in order to fulfill its requirement of justice, whereas 4:129 deals with Muslim men who are tired of their wives and seek a concession of rights from them as an alternative to divorce as revealed after the Muhammad and Sauda situation. Quran 4:129 also gives Muslim men a workaround for the requirement of material equality as mandated in Quran 4:3 regarding the taking multiple wives. The Quran does not prohibit polygamy; in fact it appears to make it much easier when the implications of both of these verses are taken into consideration.

Pls let me know your view, if any.

"May Allah make our imaan as strong and solid like hardest rocks".

Wassalam.
