Like almost every other aspect of islam, the islamic teaching about equality of all people was new to Arabia and the world. Before Islam, Racism or being against others over their skin colour, was normal.
Arabs thought they were superior to non-arabs and lighter-skinned people looked down upon those who were darker. In addition, the Arabs believed that a person's importance also came from who their ancestor's were.
So if a person belonged to a certain family, they considered themselves better than others.
This wasn't just a problem in Arabia but the entire world was covered in a cloud of racism.
