Is Patriotism not Nationalism allowed in Islam or is both allowed Im from the United States and want to know if I can be a American Patriot and a Muslim at the sametime Im not saying that I support the American Government's policies towards Iraq and Afghanistan and Palestine but I do respect my nation's Founding Fathers who fought the British Empire and I have respect for the American Constitution even though I believe it is outdated and not needed anymore I have no respect for any of America's Presidents who have been President in the past 50 years but I do respect the Founders I don't hate the American People or America because I know that Americans and America are and is under Zionist Occupation too just like Palestine is and the Palestinians and or the Palestinian People are ?

Assalaam walaikum,

I am not a scholor. I am a simple woman.

Faith is something we can not put into a box. As you grow in faith you discover that you shed things along the way. It the nature of the beast.

As you grow in faith your need for God ( Allah ) becomes the primary need. You start to gain an understanding of the Big Picture: His Laws.

When you start to fear Him..you begin a process of releasing from you the things you used to hold dearly. They can be objects or ideals.

It's not a one day trip. It is a life long process.

So what I am trying to say is things like patriotism and nationalism diminish because the Law of Unity is what you uphold.

If this makes sense let me know.

Actually I have no idea what is nationalism or patriotism. I have fighted for human rights of Palestinians last 25 years but not being Palestinian. I do it because they are my sisters and brothers of Islam, not because of some country. Not even that one I am from.

Don't worry about it, sister.

No one country is better than another. There is nothing wrong with being proud of where you are from. But I think that you should not take it to an extreme to the point where you think you are better than someone else because they are not from the same county (or same area of the same country) as you.

That's my take on it, anyway.

Interesting idea.

I am not proud where I am and not where I am not.

Hey, I understand. I'm kind of a "man without a country" myself. I'm not really proud to be a USA'rican most days. I know too much about our terrible errors in foreign policy to just ignore that and wave a flag in my front yard.

Islam is a way of life

About Nationalism: I am not nationalistic. I never was even before I was Muslim. But now more than ever, I put my heart into Islam - not my country. Countries are nothing but lines on the Earth created by man.

If you think about it, nationalism is awful. Why should an American, or a Western European have more rights than someone born in the Gambia or Afghanistan or the poorest part of China? The American media really wants Americans to think we're better than anyone else :/

I have issues describing my feelings on abstract ideas like nationalism ><

As salaamu alaykum.

Yes, this is the part where I am ashamed to be a USA'rican (I don't use the term "American" because South Americans are Americans too). We have this sense of entitlement to something that frankly we never really earned. We stole it from the ones who lived here, and brought others against their will to build it. US history is full of a lot of tragedies. There is some good yes, but I think that our general attitude of arrogance and ignorance is what makes us hated by the world.
