Islamic study methodology???

Asalamaleikum.

i have recently come across a brilliant islamic online university. they do live sessions with question and answers, all exams will be under the eye of a teacher at the local IOU centre. they go by the madeenah, al azahar university curriculum. They have diploma courses which you get certified for and even have B.A in islamic studies and are about to or have started the Masters in islamic studies. From my knowledge, the intention is to eventually go upto the PHd in islamic studies.

the only real difference fromactually going to the al azhar university or madeenah is that 1)you wont have to learn arabic (one should do this in his/her spare time)
2) you wont have a scholar to show you adhab (one should learn about the adhab of the prophet muhammad S.A.W. 3)it will be harder as one wont have anyone to account to except him/herself. Aside from them 3 things which one can still get, you will be taught by proper scholars who have graduated from al-azhar or madeenah university.

I have some questions which i hope the people of knowledge and experience can help me with.

currently i am learning tajweed, and then eventually arabic in shaa Allah.

however I would like to know the method the scholars used for studying. I have read some fatwa's on seeking knowledge and the sheikh said 'learn, memorise and understand the book (could be anything from aqeedah onwards)

i believe if one has the great memory which is attained through abstaining from sins, as knowledge is light from Allah and Allah does not give light to the sinner as one scholar put it....then you could memorize all the hadith and Quran and refrences.

problem is i dont speak arabic YET. correct me if i am wrong, but i feel there is no point in memorizing the english hadith, Quran, tafseer except the references because the difference in english and arabic is such that much is lost in the translation.

i have come to the conclusion that it is best to learn references and read the hadith/ Quran (or tafseer) over and over again until you can UNDERSTAND it as there is no point in memorizing something which you dont understand. correct?

I would greatly appreciate any input on this topic by the people who have knowledge and experience on this matter or about how our predecessor went about studying.

jazakallah khar, i am looking forward to the answer
