As far as I understand, this tradition comes by differentiating ourselves from those non-muslims who do showoff of their wealth in this world. You would have seen queens and kings with long rob behind them and their servants holding it, while they walk. There is no “takabbur” in Islam.
Secondly, when you walk with these excess piece of clothes it comes under your feet / shoes and bring lot of germs in your clothes (from dirty streets / bathroom etc.). (Remember people wearing jeans that are well crushed under their shoes). Prayer in such clothes that are not clean may not be well accepted.
However some people make their pants too high which may look quite odd to many. This care about clothing should not be just specifically during prayers but all of our 24 hours life.

Dear Brother,
Few years ago high pants were in fashion. Colourful socks were visible between shoes and pants. That time no one flet it funny becuase it was a part of fashion.
Similarly, these days women are wearing high pants, showing some part of their legs. This is also not funny as it is part of fashion!
People adopt to latest fashion to please other human beings around them and to get some good remarks from them. No matter what kind of fashion it is, no one feels it funny.
But if you wear similar clothing for the sake of your cleanliness or some other useful purpose, it gets funny. If you really want to wear such clothes and feel happy about it, you should seek reward from Allah not from them.
