Are you familiar with that awful feeling you get when you’ve been conned … you’re left feeling so naïve , regretting the choices you made, wishing you’d listened to the advice you were given , angry at yourself because you’re the one who has to live with the consequences for the rest of your life …..

Well every time we sin that is exactly how we should feel … cos Satan the “chief deceiver” (31:33 , 35:5 , 57:14) has fooled us ... he has quite literally taken us for a ride ….. “Satan said: "See? This one whom You have honoured above me, if You give me respite (keep me alive) to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring (by sending them astray) all but a few!" (17:62)…. ‘Seize & mislead’ are derived from the Arabic word “yahtanikana” … which literally means to harness, placing a bit in the animals mouth … I’ll leave the rest to your imagination…..

A word of advice from Allah (swt) …. “O mankind! Verily, the Promise of Allâh is true. So let not this present life deceive you, and let not the chief deceiver (satan) deceive you about Allâh.” (35:5)

So WHY do we sin ???

… It’s not as if we don’t know any better …. “Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path...” (2:256) …..

We are told clearly “Follow not the footsteps of Satan. Verily! He is to you a plain enemy.” (2:208 , 6:142) …..

We all know that “…. He (Satan)only invites his followers that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire.” (35:6) …

& who in their right mind would follow in the footsteps of someone heading to hell ???

No one forces us to sin , we consciously make that choice ...

“His companion (satan devil)] will say: "Our Lord! I did not push him to transgress, (in disbelief, oppression, and evil deeds) but he was himself in error far astray." (50:27)

Do you really believe we can hold him responsible for our actions & point the finger of blame at him ???

“And satan will say when the matter has been decided: "Verily, Allâh promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, so you responded to me. So blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (satan) as a partner with Allâh (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.)." (14:22)

No I didn’t think so either … so it really is time we took responsibility for our actions …

But when I’m faced with a decision & my inner conscience “…the nature of Allah in which he has created mankind…” (30:30) battles it out with those “satanic whisperings” (7:20, 7:200, 20:120) or “an evil thought” (7:201) … how am I able to put my faith aside & convince myself that this sin is small … in fact it’s so insignificant that I don’t even have to feel guilty about it ..

& why do I sin ? ....I think I know the answer ….. I sin quite simply because I don’t realize I’m sinning !!! Yes I know that sounds crazy but Satan makes my deeds “fair-seeming” (6;43, 16:63, 27:24, 29:38) to me .... From the Arabic word “zayan” meaning to adorn or beautify ... & remember when “Satan said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.” (15:39) ….

That’s it !! that’s the reason we sin, we don’t think of it as sinning, somehow we manage to convince ourselves that it’s no problem, there are people doing much worse things so it’s alright, it’s no big deal …

Everyone is doing it is not an excuse .. in fact when you find everyone doing it warning sirens should go off in your head because …

“And indeed he (satan) did lead astray a great multitude of you. Did you not, then, understand?” (36:62)

Satan is the “outcast” (3:36, 16:98) so find the strength & cast him out .. “Verily! He has no power over those who believe & put their trust only in their Lord (Allah). His power is only over those who obey and follow him (satan), and those who join partners with Him (Allah).” (16:99-100)

& “Ever feeble indeed is the plot of satan”. (4:76)

But don’t worry … there’s a happy ending …. =)

“Say: "O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (39.53)

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, By Him in whose Hand my soul is, if you did not commit sins, Allah would replace you by other people who would commit sins, then He would forgive them after they sought His forgiveness.” [Muslim].

“And if an evil whisper comes to you from Satan then seek refuge with Allâh. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower”. (7:200)
