Making a Congregational Dua

I've seen it mentioned many times before that making a collective dua in a congregation after salah is bidah.

However, I was watching Makkah's Tahajjud salah, as well as Jumuah salah - they did a congregational dua both times. For the Jumuah, the imam led everyone in dua, and everyone had their hands raised after the khutbah, before the salah. And also in the Tahajjud salah, the whole congregation was standing with their hands raised and the imam did dua.

I'm sure there's something I'm not understanding here. Is there a difference as to the kind of congregational dua allowed or not allowed?

thats in witr salah....reciting dua qunoot.

:salam2:

Ah, that was witr ? I didn't know, because everyone was looking up at the sky, beseeching Allah and crying (and some looked like they were saying their own words); with the imam with his hands raised like in dua as well... Since it didn't look like a part of salah, I thought it was just them doing a dua.

JazakAllahu Khayr for clearing it up, brother.

Shafi Madhab:Fajr Salaah, has Qunoot. And during second half of ramlaan, even witr has qunoot.

but its not so for Hanafi. [not aware of other two madhab]

Yes, there is a lot of subtleties out there!

salam alikom,
I once asked a sheikh, he followed the Hanafi school of thought, the same question? He said it was ok, because people praying are indirectly taught how to make dua, while the imam does it.
