Maternal exercise heart tonic for fetus

While excessive exercise during pregnancy can be dangerous for the fetus, a new study shows gentle exercise boosts fetal development.

According to the study presented at the American Physiological Society's conference, maternal exercise is both good for the fetus and the mother.

Exercise during pregnancy not only has cardiovascular benefits for the fetus but also increases its breathing movements -- a practice movement which makes the fetus ready to breathe after birth.

Babies exposed to exercise are reported to have a more mature respiratory and central nervous systems.

Scientists advise expectant mothers to get more exercise, adding that they should discuss the type and intensity of exercise with their physician or midwife.
