Moving to Houston. Any sisters there?

Assalamualaikum,

Inshallah I'm moving to Houston next month. I did Istikhara for this for some days, and a week later my heart has grown so very strong to just move. :)

I want to know if there are any TTI sisters living there? What's the muslim community there like? Are there many hijabis?

I'm busy these days applying to jobs. I'm scared that people will refuse once they see the hijab. (And I'm a relatively new hijabi, so my courage isn't too strong)

Please make dua for me that I get a good HALAL job! Being a Finance minor really stinks, and I'm trying to just ignore all comments I get to "apply to this bank or that bank."

Look out for more threads from me soon on various issues.

wassalam.

Putting ones trust in Allah is a very important part of a Muslims faith and any that wants to follow God's True Religion. To put trust in Allah means one relies on their Lord at all times whether that be something that seems significant or insignificant, whatever it is a true believer always puts their trust in Allah. The awareness that Allah their Lord has power over all things is a great comfort for them. Everything in the heavens and everything on earth glorifies Allah. Sovereignty and praise belong to Him. He has power over all things. (64:1)

Man was actually created to put his trust in Allah and this is how he finds true peace, a lot of people ignorant of Islam and the guidance and morals of Allah’s Qur’an always try to find ways to be peaceful, but they never actually achieve that. The simple reason for this is because they do not follow the Religion God, their Creator, has perfected for His servants and the high morals He has commanded in the Qur’an, also they don’t know how brilliant putting trust in Allah is, they may often hear people telling them ‘Put Your Trust in Allah’ yet they never actually realise what this really means, or fail to grasp the full meaning and effect of trusting Allah; Al-Muqaddisi makes the following very interesting point;

Call on God and you will be sheltered from all fear. Trust in Him and you will find happiness. But alas! Who knows how to give an ear to what I say? Who can grasp it’s full meaning and etch it into his memory?. (Revelation of the Secrets of Birds and Flowers - by Al-Muqaddisi )

his is an excellent example of complete trust in Allah in all matters, and it is the strong pillar that a believer depends on.

Trust in Allah is what caused the Prophet to say to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab on the day of reconciliation of Hudaibiyah after the signing of the treaty: “Oh ibn al-Khattab, I am the Messenger of Allah and He will never fail me.” (Agreed upon)

Trust in Allah is what caused Ibrahim, peace be upon him, while he was being thrown into the fire to say: “Sufficient for us is Allah and He is the best of judges.”

Trust in Allah is what made the Prophet and his companions say: “Hasbuna Allahu wa N’ima-al Wakeel - Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] is the best Disposer of affairs.” This was said when returning from the battle of Uhud after the hypocrites said, “Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.”

What was the result?

Allah says:

“So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allah. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allah. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty” [3:174]

Then Allah said in the following verse:

“So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers” [3:175]

From the trust that the Prophet Muhammad had in His Lord he used to always believe that Allah would aid and support him and that Allah would not abandon him.

Remember you are not the first to be afflicted by frustration and a sense of hopelessness, actually some of the companions were also afflicted by frustration and a sense of hopelessness because of the large power which they witnessed possessed by the disbelievers and the weakness the Muslims had towards them, as well as their small number.

The Prophet used to remind them during the worse situations that the future was for Islam. When Khabbab ibn al-Arat [The one who was branded on his back with heated iron bars by his master, consequently causing it to heat up with nothing to sooth it except his own body fat when it melted ] came complaining to the Prophet about the difficulties he experienced along with his companions in Makkah, he said:

“Why don’t you pray for heavenly help for us? Why do you not request for Allah’s help for us?”

The Prophet replied:

“Allah will surely help Islam complete its mission, till a rider will proceed from San ‘aa to Hadhramaut, fearing nothing save Allah and the danger of the wolf concerning his sheep. However, you are too hasty” (Bukhari)

Jazakallah khair brother. I wouldn't be going if I didn't trust Allah, after all, I didn't really want to go before Istikhara, but after Istikhara my heart's really changed position.

So doesn't anyone live near that area, and can tell me anything about that place?

I live a few 100 miles off Houston in another college town. But I know that Houston has tons of muslims and the Muslim Associations and communities are very active. Houston has tons and tons of muslim businesses, especially when it comes to Halaal food, so many restaurants serve it.

Most of the people from Indian Subcontinent prefer to live in Sugarland from what I have heard.

Masha'Allah the sisters therre i have seen wear hijab. You'll be suprised with the number of warm and nice muslim families there are in Houston. :)

There are many opportunities to attend Islamic events too like Texas Dawah Convention and other lectures etc. Also Univ of Houston holds a lot of events. I think their MSA (Muslim Student Association) is really active. I have heard that the muslim community centres hold lot of halaqas and classes as well.

I would advise you to google some Islamic centres near to the place you plan to live and email them and inform them about your arrival. They might be actually turn out to be very helpful and might even have programs for new muslims settling in that area.

I hope someone from Houston pops up in here and provides you with more information about the matter concerning a Muslimah when moving to a city like Houston.

If you want to find out anything about Houston from me, please feel free to ask me. I will try my best to ask people in my city and provide you with an answer Insha'Allah tallah.

Jazakallahu Khair, brother! May Allah grant you ajar for giving me this information. I've been depressed lately (due to other reasons, not due to moving), and I was wondering about how likely a person is to get a job being a hijabi, but your post has encouraged me a lot! Thank you. Inshallah, the idea of emailing the Islamic centers will be very beneficial. Looking forward to all the muslim community events and stuff I can be a part of. Though I do have tons of people I know or my parents know over there, I don't think any of them are hijabis, so I was getting nervous about what they would say. But if there's a sizable hijabi population, inshallah, everything will be okay.

Insha'Allah the prospects of you finding a job will be good sister. I have seen some sisters work here with Hijab. I don't know if they are discriminated against or not. Allahu Alim. But we can surely make dua to make it easy for you and Allah swt will make some provision for your rizq Insha'Allah. :)

The muslim community is very welcoming and warm as per my experience. Insha'Allah you will be able to make loads of close friendships if you frequent the mosque, islamic centre and attend the various islamic events. And ofcourse, the sisters there will be more capable of helping you out with regards to being a hijabi in Houston :).

If there's anything that you want me to find out. Please let me know.

Wasalaamalaikum waa rahmatullahi
