عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:
أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ رَمَضَانَ شَهْرُ اللَّهِ الْمُحَرَّمُ
رواه مسلم
It is narrated from Abu Huraira that the Prophet [SAWS] said,
"The best fasts after (the fasts of) Ramadan are the fasts of the month of Allah, Muharram".
[Reported by Muslim]
Vocabulary from the Hadith
أَفْضَلُ (afdal) - The best, most virtuous, most meritorious
الصِّيَامِ (as-siyaam) - fasts (singular: صوم) , also note, the combination of these two words denotes the superlative meaning.
شَهْرُ (shahr) - month
شَهْرُ اللَّهِ (shahrullahi) - the month of Allah
Lessons from the Hadith
Shaikh Salih Al Munajjid says,
"The statement of the Prophet, "month of Allah" is grammatically associating the month to Allah. This is to show the honor and greatness of this month.
But it is established from the sunnah that the Prophet [SAWS] never fasted a whole month except Ramadan. So this hadith is understood to encourage increasing of fasting in the month of Muharram and not to fast the entire month."
