musical instruments haraam

I know musical instruments are haraam. But I was wondering what the reasoning is? I saw it written on some site that if there's a violin in a closet at a house, then even the namaaz will not be accepted. I thought that was a bit extreme..

Anyway, before I found out about the musical instruments being haraam, I used to have a wish to learn how to play the violin. I also sometimes used to try to play the piano, but I wasn't very good at it. However, after I found out I shouldn't be playing these, I've stopped completely and stopped wanting to learn violin. Though sometimes I get a wish to still play it, and my parents, who are muslims, sometimes tell me that a new school has opened close by that teaches violin, but I refuse. Still, there's a tiny part of me that's saying that maybe if I only play for a little while, it wouldn't hurt. And I also happened to see a documentary on CNN about a violinist, and since then I've been a little restless, wanting to play. I've never been interested in pop music, but I once heard someone play violin where it sounded like birds. Is it completely completely wrong in every sense to play music, even soft music?

Help me please. :)

As-salaamu `alaykum.

I hope you are well.

Regarding the claim that a violin in a closet invalidates one's salaah, then this requires proof from the Qur'aan or authentic Sunnah of the Prophet sall-Allaahu `alayhi wasallam. Remember that people can claim and say anything, especially on the Internet, but if they have no proof from Allaah or His Messenger, sall-Allaahu `alayhi wasallam, then their statements are pretty much void.

Regarding music and it's prohibition, then there are a number of threads on the matter which can be found via the search function in these forums, in which the prohibition of music, and its reasons are explained inshaa' Allaah. Music is a tool with which the Shaytaan distracts and diverts people from the path of Allaah. It can have a heavy influence upon people, may Allaah protect us from it.

The part inside us that tells us to do the unlawful is from the whisperings of the Shaytaan. So fighting these thoughts is far better for you, and highly rewarding. Many of us have/had skills and talents in haraam activities, or activities that are better left off for Allaah's sake. So if you sacrifice these desires and talents for Allaah's sake, then by His permission, they will be replaced with something far greater in terms of reward, even if that be in the next life.

May Allaah reward you and keep you firm upon obedience to him, ameen.

Take care,

Was-salaam

There are many threads here on music, use search function.

In Islam there is a clear demarcation between halaal and haraam (permitted and forbidden) .There is no existence of much or less music, as music is forbidden in Islam. Daff is an exception , but only in certain times like wedding etc.

A sin is sin whether minor or major, small or big, much or less in extent.

Allah has prohibited us doing activities that could push us far from right way. The guided is one whom Allah guides. peace is for them in this and the coming world who are on the straight path shown by Allah.

Islam gives provision for recreation. So we should do those recreational activities that are in the fold of Islam. Further to utilize the time in reading or hearing quran, or Learning deen al-islam, which is helpful to us. To lead the life in the way that Allah has ordered us and stay away from other ways .

Allah guide me and all to the right way. aameen.

Thank you everyone. I found out that it was only a madness of an hour, but I conquered the desire to play the piano/violin.

However, it is okay to sing to oneself, without music, or in front of mahram people, as long as the lyrics are good and not anything bad? For example, when I'm by myself at home, while doing household work I have a habit of humming quietly to myself. There's nothing wrong with that? :)

Like for example when I first read about the hadith that Allah (Subhana wa t'ala) hates the person who sleeps on his belly, I was shocked. I checked over the authenticity so many times, and I was really in doubt about why it is haram. But soon I found out that many of the spine problems caused, is due to sleeping on the belly. And many scientists have said that it is best to make the babies sleep on the right side, as this is the best position...

Ohh, this is shocking. I've never seen the hadith word for word, but one of my friends told me that its best to sleep on the right side, and that adults should not sleep on the belly. However. My mother has always taught me that newborn babies should be put to sleep on their bellies, without the pillow. In fact, she put all three of her children to sleep on their bellies, for a year at least. Her doctors said that it was best to have newborns sleep on their bellies, as it reduces chances of colic or something... Ya Allah.. this information must be wrong? So newborns shouldn't be made to sleep on their bellies? (I need to know what is correct, it would be good for later life )

This has recently been identified to cause crib death (SIDS) just to let you know. There are more credible writings on this subject but here is a link that will give more insight to the subject,
