[Must-Read] Virtues of 10 Days of Dhul-Hijjah (From Oct' 17, 2012 Insha Allah)

Assamalmu 'alaykkum,

We are on the verge of beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah. Allah has marked out some blessed days in this month for us to do good deeds and earn reward for it.

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best and most virtuous days of the year. They are the days in which Allaah the Mighty and Majestic - most loves the doing of good deeds. About this the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “The best days in the world are the ten days.” [Saheeh: Related by al-Bazzaar (1/234). It was authenticated by Shaykh al-Albaanee in Saheehul-Jaami’ (no. 1133).].

Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim (d.751H) - rahimahullaah – said, “Indeed, its days are the most excellent of all the days with Allaah. And it has been confirmed in Saheehul-Bukhaaree (2/382), from Ibn ’Abbaas (radiyallaahu ’anhumaa) who said, that Allaah’s Messenger (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “There ore no days during which good deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these (ten) days.” He was then asked, ‘Not even jihaad in the path of Allaah?’ So he replied, “Not even jihaad in the path of Allaah, except for a person who goes out with his self and his wealth, and comes back with nothing.” And it is these ten days that Allaah has taken an oath by in His Book, by His saying,

“By the Dawn and by the Ten Nights.” [Sooratul-Fajr 89:1-2]


This is why it is recommended to increase in making takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar), tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha illallaah) and tamheed (saying Alhamdulillaah) during these days ...” [ Zaadul-Ma’aad (1/56).]

The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “There are no days that are greater with Allaah, and in which good deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days. So increase in making tasbeeh (saying Subhaanallaah), tamheed, tahleel and takbeer, during them.”[ Saheeh: Related by at-Tabaraanee in al-Kabeer (3/110/1) It was authenticated by al-Mundharee in at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb (2/24).]

FASTING THE DAY OF ’ARAFAH:


The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the day of ’Arafah, since it is on this day that the pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of ’Arafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord. It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of ’Arafah, so he said, “It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” [Related by Muslim (no. 1162), from Aboo Qataadah (radiyallaahu ’anhu).] Likewise, the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘There is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ’Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ’Arafah), and then He revels before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking.” [Related by Muslim (no. 1348), from ’Aa‘ishah (radiyallaahu ’anhaa).]

Imaam at-Tirmidhee (d.275H) - rahimahullaah – said, “The People of Knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the day of ’Arafah, except for those at ’Arafah.” [ Refer to Jaami’ut-Tirmidhee (3/377).]

The first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah starts from October 17th, 2012, Insha Allah. We can fast and do other good deeds during the 9 days with 10th of Dhul-Hijjah being Eid (We cannot fast on Eid).

So, let us try to do good deeds and fast during those days.

Bumping this thread since tomorrow will be the 1st day of Dhul-Hijjah [October 17th] hence we shall start fasting, inshaa Allaah.

We know that the takbeer for Eid-Fitri is after Maghrib on the last day of Ramadhaan and ends at the time of the prayer of Eid-Fitri. A friend of mine once asked, how many days are the takbeer for Eid-Adha. Hence, I feel this additional information that's worth sharing on the takbeer of Eid Adha:

Praise be to Allaah.

With regard to Takbeer on (Eid al-) Adhaa, it is prescribed from the beginning of the month until the end of the thirteenth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade), and mention the Name of Allaah on appointed days”

[al-Hajj 22:28]

- which are the ten days; and because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):


“And remember Allaah during the appointed Days [These are the three days of staying at Mina during the Hajj; 11th, 12th and 13th days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah]” [al-Baqarah 2:203]

- which are the days of Tashreeq.


And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The days of Tashreeq are the days of eating, drinking and remembering Allaah.” (Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh). Al-Bukhaari mentioned in his Saheeh, in a mu’allaq report, that Ibn ‘Umar and Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with them both) used to go out to the market-place on first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, reciting Takbeer, and the people used to recite Takbeer because of their Takbeer. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab and his son ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with them both) used to recite Takbeer during the days of Mina in the mosque and in the camps, and they would raise their voices until Mina echoed with their Takbeer. It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and a group of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) used to recite Takbeer following each of the five prayers from Fajr on the day of ‘Arafaah until ‘Asr on the thirteenth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah. This applies to those who are not on Hajj; for those who are on Hajj, they should concentrate on their ihraam and recite the Talbiyah, until they throw the stones at Jamarat al-‘Aqabah on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr); after that they may recite Takbeer. The Takbeer should start with the first stone thrown at the Jamarah mentioned. If the pilgrim recites the Takbeer along with the Talbiyah, that is OK, because Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “Some would recite the Talbiyah on the Day of ‘Arafaah, and they were not told off for doing so, and some would recite Takbeer and they were not told off for doing so.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari). But it is better for the one who is in ihraam to recite the Talbiyah and for the one who is not in ihraam to recite Takbeer on the days mentioned.

Hence we know that according to the most correct scholarly view, unrestricted takbeer and takbeer restricted to certain times are combined on five days, i.e., the Day of ‘Arafaah, the Day of Sacrifice and the three days of Tashreeq. With regard to the eighth day (of Dhu’l-Hijjah) and the days preceding it, Takbeer on those days may be done at any times, not only at certain times, because of the aayahs and reports mentioned above. In al-Musnad it is narrated from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There are no days on which good deeds are greater or more beloved to Allaah than on these ten days, so recite much Tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah), Takbeer (saying Allaahu akbar) and Tahmeed (saying al-hamdu Lillaah),” or similar words.

Q: I hear some people reciting Takbir (saying: "Allahu Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]") after each Salah (Prayer) during the Days of Tashriq (11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) until the ‘Asr (Afternoon) Prayer of the third day. Is this correct or not?

A: It is prescribed to recite an unrestricted [in terms of time. Ed] or a restricted Takbir during ‘Eid-ul-Adha (the Festival of the Sacrifice). The unrestricted Takbir can be recited at any time from the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah until the last Day of Tashriq. The restricted Takbir should be recited after the Obligatory Daily Prayers starting from the Fajr (Dawn) Prayer of the Day of `Arafah until the ‘Asr Prayer on the last Day of Tashriq. The evidence for the permissibility of doing this is the Ijma‘ (consensus of scholars) and the practice of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with them).

So basically the takbeer for Eid Adha is conducted for about 5 days.
