Wanna share you one of my high school life experience.
When I was fourth year in high school I remember that one of my co-officer taught me a martial art on how to get lose to a bad guy who is grabbing me (I remember, HE (my co-officer) IS STANDING ON MY RIGHT while I'm on his left side while twisting his left hand that holds my left shoulder).
A couple of days had passed I went home early in the morning after missing a service jeepney that will lead us to our trip when suddenly a man approach and stood besides me and threaten me that he had a knife (which I really never saw) unless I gave him what I had. So I gave him the money (out of fear, maybe) that I was supposed to use for our trip, then he left.
A couple of days had passed, I recall to my co-officer what happened that day. He ask me why I didnt use the technique that he taught me. I told him "Well I can't". He asked "Why". And I said "I can't 'CAUSE HE IS STOOD TO MY LEFT (i.e. I cant execute the technique on that situation).
Moral lesson: Learn martial arts on every angle.
