my thoughts on surah Nas

alhamdulillah, today i was going over my recitation of the quran, and i decided to start with the basics. the way most people that have memorized the quran had started. i started with the very last surah in the quran: Surah An-Nas. it is a very well known and oft repeated surah. but sometimes we can tend to recite the quran without pondering it’s meaning. i must admit that at times i tend to recite this surah without giving it the proper analysis that it truly deserves.

there are two very important things that stand out in this surah. the concept of tawheed is very present in this surah. we are told not to seek refuge in Buddha, Christ, or Vishnu, but rather we are told to seek refuge in ALLAH SWT. the character and titles given to ALLAH SWT also points out the universality of the religion of islam. when it refers to ALLAH SWT as:

1. the Lord of mankind.
2. the King of mankind.
3.the God of mankind.

here is the translation of this surah in it’s entirety:

An-Nas
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind, (1) The King (or Ruler) of Mankind― (2) The Allah (or Judge) of Mankind― (3) From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper)― (4) (The same) who whispers into the hearts of Mankind― (5) Among Jinn and among Men. (6)
these verses show that Islam is not just a religion for the Arabs or Pakistanis, but rather for all of humanity.
we muslims also know of the great affect that this surah has. this surah is a perfect surah to aid in repelling the temptations of the Shaitan. the Shaitan doesn’t stand a chance against these powerful words that were revealed by ALLAH SWT in his book, the Noble Quran. at the same time, this surah also lets the believer know that not only does he suffer from the evil whisper of the Shaitan, but all of humanity and jinn suffer from the whispers of the Shaitan. therefore we as believers in islam need to use these sacred verses of surah An-Nas as a tool against our greatest enemy: the Shaitan.
may this writing serve as a reminder to myself, before reminding others.

thanks for reading
