Need a better understanding on this.

New Revert 2010
As Sallamu Alaykum,

Could someone explain a few things to me? I read many more threads and do not post on most because I have a bad habit of being "long winded" and sometimes drift off point.

I read in one of the thread that pictures of animate creatures such as humans, animals, birds, fish, insects, etc are Haraam (is the correct transliteration haraam or haram?). I am assuming plants, although not inanimate, are not forbidden? But, in many of the youtube videos, individuals are shown reciting or singing Nasheed. Is this the same as having or creating an image?

Also, a very enjoyable Nasheed to my western ear is one posted here entitled: Nasheed Hallelujah. The word Hallelujah comes from Hebrew and roughly translated means "Praise Yah" which is a shortened form of the Hebrew name for YHWH. Is it acceptable to refer to Allah as Yahweh? It seems like that would be against the teaching of Islam even though Allah is The Creator and The God of The Bible. I am asking because I am trying to learn all I can. If I am off the mark, min fud lak/min fud lik let me know.

Shokran in advance. Adhamdulillah. I do have a few hundred PDF books in the public domain on Islam; unfortunately, I can only study so much each day and I foolish injured my right eye yesterday which doesn't help.

We can say Haram or Haraam : it does n`t matter

The Noble Qur'an - Al-A'raf 7:148

And the people of Moses made in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of a calf (for worship). It had a sound (as if it was mooing). Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to the way? They took it for worship and they were Zalimun (wrong-doers).

The Noble Qur'an - Al-Anbiyâ 21:51-54

51. And indeed We bestowed aforetime on Ibrâhim (Abraham) his (portion of) guidance, and We were Well-Acquainted with him (as to his Belief in the Oneness of Allâh, etc.).

52. When he said to his father and his people: "What are these images, to which you are devoted?"

53. They said:"We found our fathers worshipping them."

54. He said: "Indeed you and your fathers have been in manifest error."

Hadith - Bukhari 3:428, Narrated Said bin Abu Al-Hasan

While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Apostle . I heard him saying, 'Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."

Hadith -Bukhari 4:47, Narrated 'Aisha

I stuffed for the Prophet a pillow decorated with pictures (of animals) which looked like a Namruqa (i.e. a small cushion). He came and stood among the people with excitement apparent on his face. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! What is wrong?" He said, "What is this pillow?" I said, "I have prepared this pillow for you, so that you may recline on it." He said, "Don't you know that angels do not enter a house wherein there are pictures; and whoever makes a picture will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be asked to give life to (what he has created)?"

Hadith - Bukhari 4:448, Narrated Abu Talha

I heard Allah's Apostle saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."

Hadith -Bukhari 5:338, Narrated Ibn Abbas

Abu Talha, a companion of Allah's Apostle and one of those who fought at Badr together with Allah's Apostle told me that Allah's Apostle said. "Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture." He meant the images of creatures that have souls.

One muslem schollar (may Allah preserve him) and many other scholars have declared that live broadcastings of images do not fall within the ambit of picture-making (taswir). A picture is something that is permanent and static, whilst the image broadcasted live is not permanent hence cannot be termed a picture. A live broadcast is in reality a reflection of the actual image, similar to seeing an image in a mirror.

Therefore, if an image of a human or animal is broadcasted live, then this does not fall into the unlawful picture-making. It will be permitted to broadcast something live or view a live programme, provided the content of the programme is lawful (halal)

According to the same schollar, that which is recorded in a videotape or DVD is also not considered a picture. In a videotape, the particles of an image are gathered and then re-opened in the same order to view the image. This is the reason why it is not possible to see the picture in the rail of the tape without playing it.

Therefore, if a permitted and Halal event, such as a lecture of a scholar, is played and viewed on a videotape or DVD, it will be permitted, Insha Allah.

The schollar (may Allah preserve him) sums this up in one of his Fatawa:

"The images appearing on live programs or recorded programs on television are not the pictures in the strict sense envisaged in the Ahadith of the Holy Prophet (Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam) unless they are printed in a durable form on paper or on any other object. But the basic reason why Muslims are advised not to keep TV sets in their homes is that most of the programs broadcast on the TV channels contain impermissible elements."

And Allah knows best

Concerning the Nasheed it think some muslems try to show that our God(all people) is One God so they borrow some idioms from other languages but we (muslems) are sure that the true name of our creator is Allah sobhanahu wa taala : all other names are due to repeated translations and what people invented and added by their hands.........Quran is the only correct source of knoweldge: who is our one God. The only book that can wipe hearts from impurities and direct them sincerily to their creator is Quran because it tells man who is God in a most perfect pure bright manner(It is the work of Allah sobhanahu wa taala) May Allah sobhanahu wa taala forgive us all

Praise be to Allah (The Glorified and Exalted).

I have written a series of short introductions to Islamic theology. They are mainly directed at a younger audience, but perhaps you may benefit from it also. I would be curious to know if it helps you understand Islam better or clear misconceptions. The pdf file is attached and is called "The Creation."
