As far as i know they are quite sound, as we can all see that he is refering to the Quran and Sunnah for his explainations. But his words are not wahi (revealtion) there are bound to be scholars out there who will disagree with him of fiqh issues (islamic jurisprudence) but that does not mean either one of them are untrustworthy.
Rather we should follow the ulemah (scholars) whom we can trust with our deen and take from them, on the condition that they refer to Allah and His messenger (ie. Quran and Sunnah). And follow the one with whom we are convinced- not the one who is easiest to follow or falls in line with out desires.
"O you who believe Obey Allah and Obey His Messenger and those in authority over you, and if you differ reguarding a matter, refer it back to Allah and His messenger if you are indeed believers" (Quran)
"If you do not know then ask the people of knowledge (ie. scholars)" (Quran)
We should not shop around for 'fatawa' (islamic rulings), and we can not dislike something once it's proven to be the correct opinion.
eg. Q: Is it allowed to have girlfriends?
A: No! Allah says 'Do not (even) come near to fornication'
But one may persist and say this scholar is such and such, this scholar is not trust worthy purly based upon the fact that the answer a scholar gave does not match his/ her own desires.
It is very important to varify the truth when you hear something (good or bad) about muslims- otherwise this is how roumous spread and the charactors of mulsims are defamed.
We have the famour example of Umm ul Mu'mineen A'isha (mother of the believers) where we can take lesson from.
