Mobile phones could cause a rail crash by interfering with a train's electronics and signalling, ministers were warned on Thursday.

The Government admitted it was ‘fully aware of the potential safety issue' and was investigating it with Network Rail chiefs.

It is feared the next generation of high-speed 4G broadband mobile phones, due to be launched from 2014, could compromise rail safety by interfering with the increasingly hi-tech rail-safety systems, said Mr Berkeley.

Two independent studies have shown that 900MHz broadband interfered with radio signals between trains and signallers, he said.

The Labour peer, who is chairman of the Rail Freight Group, said it "could be a serious issue for the railways and could cause accidents".

The problems of interference could occur within a distance of 4km of any railway infrastructure, he warned.

It could cost up to £100 million (Dh572 million) to shield trains and trackside equipment to eliminate interference.

Mr Berkeley gave his warning as peers approved the first stage in the auctioning off of higher-megahertz areas of radio spectrum.
However, he suggested Ofcom should not be allowed to sell off the wavelengths that caused the biggest problem until the issue had been satisfactorily resolved.
