night of ascention?

this question is regarding when prophet muhammed(pbuh) ascended to heaven.when he ascended up from Jerusalem he was taken to heaven and saw the different levels of heaven and different levels of hell.he saw people getting punished in hell for various sins etc.
i take it why in his hadeeths we read and know certain punishments a evil doer will get, because the prophet(pbuh) saw those sinners recieving the punishments they earnt in this life. i.e. a angel was hammering a individual because he knew the quran but he would sleep at night.(just a example).

so prophet muhammed(pbuh) had first hand experience of the punishment we will recieve for commiting a sin.

my question is...................we all are to be resurrected on the day of judgement to find out what we earn't in life.on that day a good person will go to heaven and a bad person to hell.every man/women that has been created will be resurrected and sent to either of these two places.

what i want to know is what were people doing in hell getting punished before the day of resurrection and who were those people?if we are all tried and raised back to life at the same time, what were people doing getting punished in hell before others?

As far as I know these were just demos.
He got a demonstration of what it will be like in Hell and in Paradise, e.g. he saw Omar's (RA) house in paradise. These things were shown to him so that he could inform/warn the people about the day of judgement and about Heall and Heavan.

i understand that.however, like ive said.the prophet(pbuh) was shown people getting punished for various sins that they commited.who are them people and what were they already doing in hell. why have some people been put in hell before others.as far as im aware, the closest a person comes to seeing or smelling hell/heaven is in the state of barzakh.
