My name is Duncan Bayne; I've joined this site in the hopes of finding out more about Islam from those who practice the religion. A brief bio on myself: I'm an atheist Objectivist. Broadly speaking my opinion on religion mirrors that of Ayn Rand, and I think that Islam as it stands today is a greater threat to enlightenment values than any other religion.

However, the vast majority of the information I have regarding Islam is through online translations, and individual sources that are openly critical of the religion like Daniel Pipes and Robert Spencer. I've had a brief email conversation with Sherene Hassan of the ICV, but for the most part have never had the opportunity to talk about Islam with Muslims.

That in a nutshell is why I'm here - to resolve conflicting opinions about Islam by speaking to those who actually practice the religion. If my opinions on Islam are indeed misconceptions, this should be the place to discover that. However if this isn't the place for me, please let me know, as I respect the rights of the forum owner to accept or reject whomever he or she pleases.

Dear brother you are more than welcome to this site and God willingly you will find out how beneficial this site can be in gaining knowledge.
brother you mentioned that Islam is a threat to enlightenment values. One must understand what enlightenment is first? To us Muslims the enlightenment is to know the truth to know out very purpose of existence on this earth to know that one day we must all but die and we will not cease to exist but will be answerable to our each and every deed on earth. I know i am painting a very murky picture here but God willingly we will help you understand and learn what our faith is all about. brother I encourage u to look beyond what u have been fed by media with sincere heart and pose a question. God willingly my brothers and sister in this site will not let u down. well come again.

Salamalaykum (Peace be with u),

Welcome to TTI my friend, It was nice to c that u want to learn about our religion Islam. To learn about Islam the most appropriate source is either to read Holy Quran or read Sunnah (life of Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him)) or talk with a person who has the knowledge of Islam. rather then listening/talking to persons who dont have knowledge about Islam.

I think that Islam as it stands today is a greater threat to enlightenment values than any other religion.

As our brother WANTTOBEMUMIN has mention one should understand it first.
Anyways as u r here with open mind to learn and clear ur misconceptions about Islam u r very welcome to ask ur doubts about Islam, God willing we will explain it in the light of Holy Quran and Sunnah and we hope u will be enlighten with the truth God willingly.

May Allah guide us to the Truth. Ameen.

Salaam,

Please allow me to thank you for the courage to come to TTI. Insha'Allah your questions will be answered in due course.
Freedom as Ayn Rand understood it has a similar root in Islam. We must release our hold on the constant and incessant demands of this world. We have a greater purpose to fulfill. This is our destiny. We are the representatives of Allah subhana talla, to remember, we are the creatures who willingly accepted the responisibility to uphold that there is no god but Allah subhana talla. This we hold under all circumstances and conditions. We are tested and retested.
Islam is the one faith that has not fought seeking Enlightment. We are encouraged to find the Truth. History records the accomplishments of the Muslim scholars and scientists and philosophers. The poets of Islam were the source of inspiration and even Byron, Wadsworth, Keats, and Milton were knowledegable about Islam. I could go on and on and on...

What are some of the questions you have. We will be glad to answer them or refer you to very serious responses. Welcome and keep the questions coming.

Welcome to the site, You Mentioned the:

"I think that Islam as it stands today is a greater threat to enlightenment values than any other religion.

You are already coming with a Biasd View when You mentioned this and You also have said the:

"the vast majority of the information I have regarding Islam is through online translations, and individual sources that are openly critical of the religion like Daniel Pipes and Robert Spencer. I've had a brief email conversation with Sherene Hassan of the ICV, but for the most part have never had the opportunity to talk about Islam with Muslims."

So you have not met any Practising Muslims Nor you have talked about Islam to a Muslim but you have concluded Islam is a threat to enlightment based upon Non-Muslim sources and other erroneous sources.

"That in a nutshell is why I'm here - to resolve conflicting opinions about Islam by speaking to those who actually practice the religion. If my opinions on Islam are indeed misconceptions, this should be the place to discover that. However if this isn't the place for me, please let me know, as I respect the rights of the forum owner to accept or reject whomever he or she pleases."

If you have any questions, feel free to ask, there are many Brothers and Sisters here who will try to Answer any question You Have. :)
