Assalaamu 'alaykum!
One of the minor signs of the day of judgement is that people will adorn their masajid. An example of a hadith in reference to this is:
Ibn ‘Abbaas narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (saw) said:
[Aboo Daawood #448, saheeh]
From this narration it is very clear that adorning the masjid is not a part of Islaam, nay Ibn 'Abbaas even considered it from the ways of the Jews and Christians! Yet ironic it is that those who celebrate the birth of the Prophet (saw) pay no heed to this advice of the one they claim to love. During the life of the Messenger (saw), his masjid of was built of mud and stone. He (saw) forbade masjids to be lavishly decorated as masjids are not meant for this purpose. Likewise we know that it kills the khushoo' in salaah.
‘Aishah said: The prophet (saw) once did his Salaah wearing a Khameesah with decoration on. When he (saw) finished his Salaah, he said: ‘Take this Khameesah and give it to Aboo Jahm bin Huthaifah, and bring me the Anbijaaniyyah lest it’s A‘laam distracted me in my Salaah.’ [Bukhaaree & Muslim]
Imaam Muslim included this hadeeth in his chapter "The Book of Mosques and places in which Salaah is done."
So it is obvious that the place in which one is doing salaah has to be free of all distractions. Now have a look at these pictures:

Ibn ‘Abbaas said: "You are going to`adorn (mosques) as the Jews and Christians adorn (their places of worship)."
