Riyadh: Saudi and Palestinian experts, analysts and politicians on Tuesday described the decision of Palestinians to request full membership of the United Nations as a historic step.
They reiterated in their exclusive statements to Gulf News that "this step, which is significant in the history of Palestinian cause, will undoubtedly receive full Arab backing whether at the government or people level amid intensity of the Arab Spring".
Mr Abdul Rahim Mahmoud Jamos, member of the Palestinian National Council and director-general of the popular committee offices to help the Palestinian people in the kingdom, said more than 130 countries will support the Palestinian demand for the statehood.
The truth of Palestinian statehood
"Israel will find themselves under huge international pressure that will push them sooner or later to acknowledge the truth of the Palestinian statehood, which can no longer be snubbed or delayed even if uses of veto," Jamos added.
He said that in case the Palestine state gets the two-thirds of the UN General Assembly votes, the statehood will be recognised, and the Palestine will be granted a membership (non-member state). And this will be a momentum in the context of the Palestine people's struggle to retrieve their rights.
The official said "to get the status of a non-member state will grant Palestine the full membership in all branches and specialised organisations subsidiary to the UN, and an observer status in the UN General Assembly.
Non-Disputable
The Palestinian territories will become non-disputable as they will be the territories of the occupied Palestinian state."
For his part, Saudi political analyst Dr Hassan Al Ahdel said the Palestinian state was and still one of the first victims of the veto as the US used this right being a permanent member of the UN Security Council to block the resolutions in favour of the Palestinian cause.
The US used veto over 30 times over the last 60 years in favour of Israel. Hence, it blocked the international resolutions to settle the Palestinian- Israeli issue.
Al Ahdel added that the US used veto more than other four permanent members, a thing that shows it uses the UN Security Council as a launch pad to pass its interests and prevent what it does not want.
Saudi human rights activist, Suhaila Hamad, said getting a full statehood is not possible due to the US veto that always supports Israel despite its occupation of Palestine and violations in West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Granting Palestinians a statehood would strip the legitimacy of Israeli existence on the international borders of this state in accordance with the international laws, she added.
